At present set as Administrator, wish to revert back to Standard User. In change Account, Standard User box is greyed out. What procedure is required to revert back to Standard User? Thanks Bobby.

Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage Another Account. (If you are prompted for a password or confirmation - type the password or confirm)

Click the account you want to change > Change the account type.

Select the account type you want - click Change Account Type.

Remember Windows requires at least one administrator account. If you have only one account on your computer - you can't change it to a standard account.

Neil, BobbyScot wants to change his administrator account to a standard user account.

Bobby, why not keep your current administrator account and then create a new account with standard privileges and then log onto that one? As Bill said, you can't have the one user account be a standard user. You must have at least one administrator account active on the system.

I noticed the same thing on my Windows 7 machine. The user account is set to Administrator, and the standard account is greyed out.

I wonder why that is considering that Windows 7 has its own hidden administrator account.

Gentlemen, thank you for suggestions. What I am trying to achieve, is to revert back on my clicking a software Desktop Icon, that it opens without the caption of Administrator requiring to be clicked each time. I note that James Martin also refers to Standard Account being greyed out. What I would like is be able to choose the Standard Account. Not all Desktop Icons open requiring to click Administrator. Thanks Bobby.

There is no hidden admin account. There is an Administrator account that is set as Not Active. This is the account used with the Run as admin or Command prompt (admin). This account is not displayed on the login screen and there is no profile for this account until one logs into that account, after which the user profile Administrator gets created. (C:\Users\Administrator.)

To make that built in account show up in the login screen (set as active), open a Command prompt (Admin) and use the command: net user administrator /active:yes.

Note: there is no password for this account, thus after logging into it, first thing to do is to create its password.

At one time, I was able to click any software icon on my Desktop and open the selected software from scratch. I have now decided that now to revert back to the original start up that of in Standard Account, cutting out the Administrator step. Can this be done? or once Administrator is selected there is "no reverting back" to Standard Account? reason for this step being "Greyed out ".Thank you Bobby..

I normally set the UAC bar to the second lowest option which brings up the notification box when a program wants to run but it doesn't dim the desktop.
