Hello. I'm currently going through the application process for a job working from home. To complete their questionnaires, I need IE 10 or even earlier, and IE 11 is specifically excluded, as are other browsers like Chrome, etc. I have IE 11 installed, so I'm trying to work out how to "downgrade ", and running into problems.

    1. No version at all is listed under "Programs and Features ", so I imagine IE 11 is considered part of the OS, and not a separate application I can uninstall.

    2. But worse, when I try to download v. 10, I get a message: "You are running Windows 8.1 64-bit. Although Internet Explorer 10 will not run on your system, you can download Internet Explorer 10 for other operating systems." I get the same message trying to find IE 9 or 8.

Do I have any other option, or must I wait until the employer upgrades their system to accept IE 11?
    Thanks in advance.

Control Panel\Programs and Features. Turn Windows features on or off. But that only turns it off it does not uninstall the program. I would not wait for the employer to upgrade you might lose the job opportunity to somebody else. Can you access a computer running Windows 7 or even Windows XP. Maybe a friend or relative has one that they'll let you use.

I don't think you can downgrade from Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.1, but have you tried using the compatibility view option instead?

This may not solve your problem, but I thought I would throw it out there.

@lj50: Turn Windows features on or off. Aha! I hadn't spotted that - many thanks. But (as you say), it doesn't uninstall IE, merely turns it off. My wife has our XP machine, but it's located in her sort of private area; it's not that I can't use it sometimes, but to actually start regularly working in there is not on.

@James Martin: Thank you, James. Yes, I did try compatibility view (sorry, should have mentioned that). I didn't notice any visible changes, so that might be a solution. I've pointed it out to the potential employer, who hasn't replied yet whether that would be an acceptable solution. If/when they reply, I'll post here.

Hi Geoffrey, Have a look at this link:http://forums.techdiscussion.in/sho...nstall-IE-11-and-revert-to-IE-10-in-Windows-8
I tried the suggestion in the last Post and it works.

If you are having any compatibility problem with the new IE 11 with websites, you can make your browser work like older version of Internet Explorer. To do so open desktop version of Internet Explorer and hit F12. Click Browser Mode IE11 from the developer tools.

This will bring up the list of browsers saying IE7, IE8, and so on upto IE10. Simply select the one where you bank’s website was working well and you are done.

What I did. I opened IE > Tools > Checked F12 Developer tools > Expanded Document Mode (this appears LH lower part of screen) which displayed a numerical list and clicked on 10. Neil.

Hi Neil and thanks for that.

    1. Your link isn't working at the moment, but I'll keep trying.

    2. I'm meanwhile trying your suggestion from the developer tools, but I won't know whether this has worked or not until I get some kind of feedback from the prospective employer. As of now they're not replying, but it may be that they don't work weekends.

I'll certainly post any progress here for anyone else struggling with this issue.

    They lost me there, Neil.

I've never heard of a desktop version of Internet Explorer. Maybe it's a Windows 8 thing.

    James,
That's why I tried it first as it was a little hard to decipher. Neil.

Yes - as I understand it, it's a version which is on the traditional desktop which you have to access specifically in Win 8/8.1, and not the version on the "Metro" side, i.e., the default layout with tiles for touch-screen use.

OK, I'm not going to pursue this issue. Compatibility didn't work, setting a backwards simulation of an earlier version didn't work, and I looked at several methods of wiping 11 and installing 10 found by googling, but none of these was an official Microsoft script, and I didn't like playing with random unofficial advice and risking finishing up with neither version working well. I'm also not desperate to take this job.

Many thanks to all who contributed - it's still been an interesting learning session.
