    Hi friends

In a very recent similar thread, with the help from Tony, i clarified the constraints in accessing a 'SharedFolder' from other PCs in WorkGroup using 'Simple Sharing Off', 'Sharing' & 'Security' tabs and 'UserName' & 'Mandatory Password' in a predominately XPWin.sp2-3 environment.

However with a particulary PC with a 'SharedFolder', even through i can see the 'SharedFolder' it reports that rights are insufficient. Normally such a shared folder will have a user and password dialog on the 1st access and using the appropriate 'UserName & Mandatory Password'; access is remembered if so set.

My Question is how can i force the dialog for username and password to reappear. I think it PC is using cached credentials. Or is there any reason? Or is login as Remote DeskTop User helps?

    Enlightenment appreciated.

What folder is being shared. On XP Pro computers folders are shared for admin purposes only. Thus you must access that folder's properties > shariing tab and create a new share. Name is logically & set its permissions. That newly named share will show up in the network browser.

For example, My Documents is already shared for admin purposes. To share My Documents with other computers you must create a new share and call it something like Comp2-My Documents and set permissions. Add the objects (users) you want to be able to have access to this share.

    Thanks

Tony i forget to mention that the Shared Folder is in fact a new named Share. Users to this with password is created and permissions set for them in the Shared Folder.

Tony i am not sure what yr question mean. What i did was PC1 has a shared Folder newly named eg ComUse and it has a user eg Person1.

From another PC, say PC2 which also has a registered user named exactly the same as Person1. When accessing PC1 from PC2, the login dialog appears, Person1 is typed in in the user box.

Do u see a problem here?

    Use different User names.

PC1 - user logs on as Bill.
Add Bill as a user on all comps that have shares he needs to access..

PC2 - user logs on as Joe.
Add Joe as a user on all comps that have shares he needs to access.

PC3 - user logs on as Mary.
Add Mary as a user on all comps that have shares she needs to access.

With more than 5 comps it is best to use one cenrtal comp that holds all data, then just as Bill, Joe, Mary & Pete as users on that comp.

Tony i think my real need is to be able call up the username.password dialog box when i click on a PC in the WorkGroup; the reason being: i can access the PC and see its shared folders but when i click on it gives me the usual 'no rights, contact Admin'. If i can get to the above login dialog box, i thinks it may go another way.

Because of this i was hoping that someone can tell me how to flush the cache of the old log ins and expose the above dialog box.

Every time a share is accessed it will thereafter be shown in Network Places main window. Delete the share that's shown there. To access the share again use Entire Network > MS Windows Network > Workgroup > Comp > Share.

Tony sorry for the long delay to respond.

Follow yr suggestion 'Delete the share that's shown there', still no username.password dialog box (PWd-DiaBox).

In anyway what if found was clearly this:

When one log in as User1 in PcX and if User1.password is registered in PcY, User1 have no problem getting into the shared folders of PcY.

But if one log in as User2 in PcX and User2.password which is NOT registered with PcY, sometimes the PWD-DiaBox appears allowing you to type a different username.password eg User1 thus allowing User2 to access the folders.
But sometimes this window don't appear. What i want to know is how to make the PWd-DiaBox appear if it does not?

If user1 logs on to his comp, and has previously accessed a share on comp2, that share should be immediately visible in My Network Places. Then, if user2 logs onto same comp, that share may still be shown in My Network Places. But user2 should not use that shortcut. He should use Entire network > ms windows network > workgroup > share and the pw dialog will appear.

Tony i have tried the following based on what u said

User1 delete all My Network places he created when login to comp2
    User2 log in in comp2
User2 also delete all my network places relating to comp2
User2 next try to login comp2 from entire network ..... > share

Result: No password.dialog ... back to the start

Note User2 is NOT REGISTERED in comp2
But if password.dialog appears, user2 can type in user1.password then user2 gets in using user1 password.

It's possible there could be stored network passwords that interfere. Try this to "start all over" with shares access:

Start > Control Panel > Users Accounts > select your user
Under the "Related Topic ", select "Managed My Network Passwords" and
    delete the passwords.

Do that on all comps for all user accounts. And definitely register User2 in Comp2. And for security and other reasons, disable the Guest account on all comps.
