Go to Start > Run and type cmd > Enter

    type ipconfig > Enter

This will show the current status

Type ipconfig /? and You´ll get the command switches to release, renew etc.

Thanks for the reply. I had Windows ME and All I had to do is open ipcfg and a window opened. I thought you had to go through CMD, but I was not sure.

    You´re welcome ...... :) ...... !

I was on WinME before and if, in Start > Run, I typed winipcfg, a small window with a few buttons came up.

Another way to force a cable modem is to unplug it, reboot the computer, and when the Windows splash screen comes up, plug it back in again. XP will find it. There is also a "repair connection" utility in Network Options of the Control Panel. It will either fix the problem or tell you to call your system administrator  since that is ME, I usually do the unplug first...

The one I gave should not open anything for more than a fraction of a second. It simply renews the IP config data.

But it sounds like you may have something else going on. Do this:

    start~run~cmd
ipconfig /all > c:\config.txt (and nothing will show on screen)
open c:\config.txt, copy all the contents, and paste it here.
