Hi Im writing for a friend of mine, he has Windows XP Home Edition. He has set up an administration password and wants to take it off so all he has to do is click on the account to log in instead of putting in a password. How do you take the password off.

How to Enable Automatic Logon in Windows

See the end of the article .....

    Start > Run > control userpasswords2 > OK

In the dialogue box which appears ....

Clear the Users must enter a username and password to use this computer > OK

The above applies to User accounts, including those with Administrative rights. The Administrator Account requires a password.

    Anomaly?

    PeteC,

I think I may have an anomaly in that I've made Recovery Console a multiboot option and when RC asks for the administrator's pwd, it doesn't accept mine, only a cr! Mine is a single user computer requiring a pwd (mine) even though mine is the only account shown on the login screen. Of course I set it up that way. Just thought you'd be interested.

    Thanks for the info!

As a single user accounts, passwords, etc are a slightly grey/muddy area for me :). When you install XP (Pro certainly - never used/seen Home) an Admin password is asked for. Several posts on the Board from folk wanting to run Recovery Console, but not having - to their knowledge at least, a password.

The MS 'fix' does not allow autologon in Safe Mode as Admin AFAIK - not tried it in Normal mode.

Something to think about... Malware, etc.

 Before you think using the admin acct -- even on a single user PC -- is a good idea, consider this... Some malware can be defeated by simply using a lower access account type. Although it seems best to use the admin account, it's a bad idea. For everyday use, create a low level account to run programs. Log in as admin (rename the admin account, too) only for program installs, etc. Security, even on a single user PC, is good practice.

    Clarification

The Admin Account in XP (Pro for sure) is NOT the one you use to log on with. That account has "Administrative Privileges ". To get to the REAL Admin Account, tap Control-Alt-Delete twice on the Log in screen (Pro only) (You will need to remember the "real admin password" that you prob haven't typed since you installed XP. If you have an OEM, try leaving it blank, if you don't know it.)
In XP Home, you may only access the real admin account in safe mode, unless you download and installTweakUI from MS. There is an option in the XP version to add it to the log on screen.

CharlieJ is absolutely correct that we should NOT be running our XP comps with Admin priveleged user accounts, because any nasties that come in are going to have all the necessary permissions they want. We discussed this at length in a thread awhile back. The general consensus is that we were all too lazy to do the "user account switching" that having two accounts require, and so we stick with our own user admin account for convenience. At home, on your desktop, with an appropriate security policy, the risk is fairly small. Those of you with laptops using public connections would be wise to follow CharlieJ's advice.
