How many hundreds of shortcuts do you make every day? Just kidding...

Did you reboot after making the change in the link?

LOL. Steve, do you have any mates who continually sniff? Or perhaps have some other annoying personal habits?

Well, that's how I feel about the 'shortcut' label - it just bugs me. Always did in 98 and XP and Vista is no different.

Re what I did, here's what I posted on that site:

"It didn't work for me. I have two machines running Vista Ultimate, one a Dell version, the other is regular. On the Dell version, the reg value was indeed 1e 00 00 00 and I altered it to 00 00 00 00, but the word 'shortcut' was still there. I rebooted and tried again - nope. Luckily I'd exported the Explorer value, so I used the regfile to get back to the original.

But on the second machine, also Vista Ultimate, the value was 17 00 00 00 and when I altered it to 00 00 00 00 and rebooted, my display was ******* - just like 16 colors in W95 or W98! Again, I used the export to reverse the change and all is well again. "

I note that someone else commented about the varying value of 1e 00 00 00.

Maybe this fix just works on certain installs of Vista?

It states that you need to Log Off then back on after making the change in the registry not reboot. See if it works then.

Yes, you're right, Whiskeyman - it does say that.

However, after the 'asterisks'-up it made of my display on one machine, I'm reluctant to mess with it until someone comes up with a 100% reliable and kosher fix.

I too am annoyed by arrows and 'Shortcut to....' thingies....
    Try
    This Link

Called FxVisor. It's free, and it works well. I see after checking the URL they have version 2 out. I have been using using version 1 for some time. Works very similar to the utility that was in TweakUI.

Thanks for the Link. Worked a treat and I installed over the previous version without any problems.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for the link ski :)

While I don't get too exited about shortcut arrows one way or the other, I know people, who like masonite, are driven to distractiion over it :D
