I have never had to do that but I do have a couple of info sources that I have somehow saved. I offer them without any insight as to their worth:

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer in Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP

Repair or Reinstall Internet Explorer6 and Outlook Express 6

Edit: I just noticed your status as being beginner so perhaps if you would elaborate on the problem you have with IE, someone here may be able to help you without you having to take any radical steps.

    Ver 7.0
    2.App Name iexplore.exe
    Mod Ver. mscvr71dll

I also have a damaged program file which I don,t know how to fix.
    Thanks for your interest.

OK, stick around and perhaps someone may know what program you have that is dependant on the dll's mentioned and that may also have an association with IE functions.

FWIW, I have neither of those dll's on my system so either you have something installed that requires them or it's possible that you may have some malware that you cleaned up but not totally. Just guessing until someone smarter shows up.

I doubt re-installing IE will fix your problem - once you find what is calling for these dll's when you open IE, you'll have your answer.

Edit: As an added thought, try trimming some programs form your Start Up group and see if the trouble disappears. You can run MSCONFIG and uncheck some of the items in the Start-Up tab or else use some 3rd part proggy such as StartCop or whatever.

Thanks,I believe the damaged file depends on : Download\iuctl.inf System\iu engine.dll and system32\iuctl . but other than that I am at a loss.

Further insight on that problem here:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=iuctl

From what I see in those Google hits, your problem may be related to MS Updater so perhaps disable Auto-Updating to see if that makes the error message go away. If so, then follow the directions after gleaning through those Google search hits.

Can you do a file search for this mysterious dfl.dll and right click on it to check the properties to see if it leads to which program it belongs to?

Google has very little info on dfl.dll, but one which caught my eye seemed to be malware related. It would be helpful to see an HJT log ....

Please download HijackThis through Quicklinks in my signature and save it to a folder on your hard drive, say C:\HJT - not to the Desktop or a temporary location. When entries are fixed with HJT a backup is made to the folder from which HJT is run and this must be in a permanent location.

Boot into Safe Mode and log onto your usual account.
Open the folder in which you placed HJT and double click on hijackthis.exe and select Scan and save a log file - this will be saved in the folder from which you ran HJT.

Reboot into Normal mode and post the log here.

    FWIW - msvcr71 dll
    - as you discovered. AFAIK Internet Explorer is not dependant on this file at all - it is not present on my computer.

AcroPDF.dll is part of Adobe Reader

Are you running the latest, patched version of IE 6? If so go to Tools > Manage Add-ons and disable all the add-ons. If IE now works re-enable the add-ons one at a time until the problem re-occurs. I suspect a toolbar may be the cause of the problem.

    From your second post
    Which program - which file?

Check & report errors (from IE) as shown in your Event Viewer.

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application and System logs for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

I followed your advice and disabled all but when I tried to download a PDF the IE message came up again.

The damaged file is No 9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F
"This file depends on: Download\iuctl.inf iu Engine dll System\32 iuctl.dll[damaged] "

Before I post a possible solution please advise if you can access Windows Update. If you are unable to access do you get a message similar to this

Hmm - that rather indicates that iuctl.dll is OK and my researched solution inapplicable.

Have you looked in Event Viewer as suggested by Arie.

In the meantime, if you have a full XP CD - not a Recovery CD, run System File Checker

Pete is trying to get you to run sfc to replace missing or damaged system files. Please don't let my intrusion into this thread distract you from that suggested goal or process.

Since you seem to indicate that you have a problem opening pdf's in explorer and the files accompanied by errors also seem to point to acrobat reader, maybe you should consider uninstalling any acrobat versions you have via the add/remove software icon in the control panel and after making sure you have deleted any folder residue that may be left over, download the latest acrobat reader and install that clean and fresh:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html (I would make sure to uncheck the "yahoo toolbar" and the "photoshop album starter addition" components that are automatically prechecked as part of the download link), unless I was interested in these. As a side note the file ACROPDF700_707.RTP as near as I can tell google searching this, is related to some update that you have done at some time invovling the acrobat. Doesn't seem to be important here, but I am including it to be as thorough as possible in addressing your posts. This may be of interest to you also:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331025.html

Make sure your up to date on your IE updates. All updates for that matter. Open IE options and on the general tab>click on the settings button>View objects button and look for any damaged or unneeded item. Delete these. If you need them again they will either be installed or offered to be installed again when needed.

*Note it may very well be that the damaged 9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F yada-yada cab will be here. If not look in your Downloaded Program Files folder. You can right click all of the objects and click on the properties to find out. It is my understanding that this cab and any files referenced or used by it can be ignored, if updated. It is from the older mv4 update site. Ms now redirects to another site using updated methods, folders and files for updating. Hence why you may not be having any problems using ms updates because you are not trying to use the older mv4 link. There's probably a better more permanent method of taking care of this but most references just ignore it as it is harmless. I'll have to look further into this. Maybe using your system tool "disk clean" and including the "downloaded programs folder" as part of the cleanup.

After doing as PeteC suggests (if you have your xp cd or lacking that your i386 folder on the harddrive as many OEMs may have), should you choose to do as I suggested, see if the new acrobat reader takes care of your problem.

    ---------------
As a side note please make sure the file your indicating as causing explorer to crash is actually AcroPDF.dll. The name has changed a few times as your posts progressed. Acrop dfl dpf ??? The correct file name is important.

I also have a few thoughts on the file "mscvr71.dll" but the above is enough to work on for now, I think.

    =======Hmmm..Curiousity...=======
You don't have software such as this do you?
    http://www.programurl.com/photoshop-speedup.htm

Probably just a coinsidence but I thought it worth asking as long shot?
