Whenever I start up the computer I receive a Dell Suuprt Icon in the startup tray. I have continually clicked on the settings that I want no announcements. I have tries to remove it from the start up through MSCONFIG but all to no avail.
What do I need to do to get rid of this at start up. Possibly I removed the wrong program from start up

    Hi Jerry,

Sounds like this particular startup reinserts itself into msconfig.

To control that behavior - Mike Lin has two programs Startup Monitor and Startup Control http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml Control blocks starting up and Monitor watches the system on a real time basis for anything trying to insert itself to the startup folders.

I, also, have a new Dell and get this icon in the notification area as well as popups several times during the day from Zone Alarm saying that Support.exe wants to access the Internet. (If you are not getting the popups, you must have Disallowed access for Support.exe in your Firewall.)
The program and associated icon are not coming from MSCONFIG, Services, win.ini or the StartUp file. However, you can right click on the icon and see if any of the options are more appealing. None obviously allow the icon to be dismissed. But I think you will find the icon will eventually be "hidden" as your session proceeds. You can also right click in a blank area of the Taskbar|Properties|Notification Area|Customize|right click on the right hand column ( "Behavior ") next to Dell Support Alerts|choose "Always Hide ". That won't get rid of the icon, but I think it will stay hidden under the Arrow in the Notification Area even at start up.
Of course you could, more drastically, run a Search for support.exe and disable one or all of the Dell versions you will find to see if that will kill it.

charlesvar--That was a good idea to offer the answersthatwork link.
Usually it offers good advice. However, in this case, after saying that Dell's support.exe is not a needed/desireable program, the only solution offered to get rid of it is to buy http://www.answersthatwork.com/TUT_pages/TUT_information.htm
As I mentioned earlier, support.exe is not in any of the usual startup places.
However, I did not look into all.

Didn't realize that, and I'm certainly not shilling for for the site - did not have that in mind at all.

As I mentioned earlier, support.exe is not in any of the usual startup places.

If any program will find it, autoruns will http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

A caution here, it is a powerfull tool to be used carefully.

    charlesvar--
I certainly did not mean to imply that. While I have not used answersthatwork recently, in the past their advice was very helpful and usually had a manual alternative to that program.
Perhaps Jerry Dunn will try some of the other ideas offered.

I have a Dell also. What I did to get rid of these icons (Dell Support, and Dell Solution Center and Dell Media Experience was to create a folder on my desktop, labeled it System tools, and put these icons in it. They are safely out of the way and not longer clutter up the desktop.

It's not a very good move on the part of Dell to force themselves on their customers like that. Not being given a simple way of saying "thanks but no-thanks!" would completely pee me off!

I setup a Dell system for my brother a few weeks ago. Do remember Dell's icon on the desktop and had so much else to do, didn't even think about it.

When I go back over the Holiday, will play with it. Now mighty curious as to where it's starting from :)

My daughter had something that sounds like it might have been the same thing on her Dell. I thought it was called Dell help and support but could be wrong. It's been a long time. Anyway, there was an entry in add>remove programs for it. I uninstalled it a long time ago and she's never missed it. The Dell icon (may have been more than one; I don't remember) dissappeared after that. You might have a look and see if you can unistall it if you haven't already.

Zander--You are correct about Dell Support being in Add/Remove. I have not tried it, but I wonder what would happen if you removed it. Dell Help&Support is a replacement by Dell (in the Start area and when you click Help in the Menu bar for Windows Explorer) for the usual MS Windows Help. I have left it but also created a shortcut to MS Windows Help so I can access it directly and quickly if I want.
Dell's Help&Support often eventually leads you to Windows Help when they cannot answer the question.

Wonder what Jerry Dunn is doing?

Well, all I can tell you is that she's never missed it. I asked her about it every now and then for a while and she said she'd never had a problem. I can't tell you though, if she ever tried the help after that. You never know. It seems to be the last place people look when they have a problem of some type. In her case it might be extra true. She tends to use me for her help file. :) She's home now so I'll check with her on it. If she hasn't tried it, I'll have her give it a try when she go's back to school. She was talking about maybe going back today but I'd be seeing her again at Christmas. I'll let you know what I find.

I wonder though, if the uninstall routine maybe puts things back to the default as Diskeeper does.

    Hi Jim,

have not tried it, but I wonder what would happen if you removed it. Dell Help&Support is a replacement by Dell (in the Start area and when you click Help in the Menu bar for Windows Explorer) for the usual MS Windows Help.

I do remember accessing XP's Help & Support on that system I setup to turn clear type on and nothing different about it. I would think Dell's is a supplement, not a replacement - but won't know until I get back to my Brother's system.

I just talked to my daughter and as I thought, she couldn't recall ever using the help. She said she'd give it a try when she goes back. I'll post back when she lets me know what she finds.

Another thought. I would think you could set a restore point, uninstall it and then check to see if things work correctly. Something to think about.

Getting Rid of Dell Support Alert icon in System Tray

If you want to get rid of the systray icon without uninstalling Dell Support, you can edit your registry:

    Run "regedit "

Go to "My Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dell\Alert\1.0 ". Delete "sysTray" and then change "Updatenotification" to "False "

Be sure to establish a restore point before making any registry modifications so you can recover if things go badly.

    This has worked for me.

    khaase --Thanks for the tip.
However, I do not see "Updatenotification" in my Alert\1.0 Key. Perhaps just deleting the SysTray key will do? Or maybe disabling NotifyAlert.exe in the C:\Program Files\Dell folder?
