How to open photo files with extrension .img?

I have saved to memory from the Internet several photos with file names having the extension .img.
I cannot open these files, and cannot find anything in the "open with" list that will work.
Please what must I do to open .img kinds of photo
files?

 

Download and install IrfanView from Here also download and install any plugins. BTW it's freeware and probably one of the best imaging software programs anywhere.

IMG files should open with Irfanview (IMG - GEM raster format)

 

JohnB: Thanks much for your reply. I have downloaded irfan program and its plugins. It is a great photo viewer, but strangely it will not open my photo files with the .img extension. I suppose they are not of the .img(GEM) type. But I am wildly guessing. Any suggestions? ---Lee

 

This free Viewer will open many image types, including at least one implementation of img (an open format that can be altered by users):

It is generally used for ERDAS Geographic Imaging, but the viewer is free.
