    I downloaded shutdown.exe from http://www.budja.com/shutdown/ and it's sitting in my C:\.

It's supposed to work with XP Home.

Supposedly one can click on a Shortcut and it will eliminate the three clicks "Start," "Turn off computer" and "Turn off" required to shut down and turn off the power, plus start supper :=)

There's supposed to be a way to make a Shortcut with the string "C:\shutdown.exe -1 -f" (without the quotes)

However, when I do it the monitor screen just flashes.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong. The Instructions seem to be missing steps 6, 7, & 8, at least for us novices.

    I got the -1 -f switches from Run, cmd.exe --- C:\shutdown.exe

    Thanks,

    Kerry

This shutdown shortcut works for me.

Right click on desktop > new > shortcut

In the "Type location of item" enter:
    C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe "“s

(be sure to leave one space between .exe and -s)

Click on Next > enter a name for the shortcut then click Finish

Right click on the shortcut you just created then click properties
Click on Shortcut key, enter Ctrl + Alt + F10
    Click on Apply > OK

Computer will shutdown in 30 seconds.

    Hi mkbooth:

I tried your trick but it leaves the message - It's ok to turn off your computer now, which is equally annoying.

With Win98 I had a Shortcut that when I clicked it I could go to bed.

I also tried it with Budja's shutdown.exe which is located on my C:\but it didn't work at all.

Thanks for teaching me how to make that kind of Shortcut.

I am glad it worked for you.

One improvement to make it shutown faster:

    C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -t 02 "“s

(Right click on the shortcut then properties and make the adjustment above.)

This starts the shutdown in 2 seconds instead of 30 seconds.

Still working on a way to make it actually turn the power off!

    Hi mkbooth:

Hope I didn't mislead you. I don't use it because I still have to return to turn off the power.

What I got from your post was how to make a Shortcut. :)

Did you read over Budja's site at http://www.budja.com/shutdown/ . He seems to have found a way to do it but I can't figure out his intructions.

    Thanks,

    Kerry
