    Hi folks:

Reciently I came across an idea that sounded great. But it never gave the how, to make it. I speak of taking all the update files you get when you do a windows update on XP (my current OS), saving them to a CDR then having them automatically installed.

Normally when I reinstall XP, or install it on a new system, I have to go though every - single - one of the update files, double click them, say yes if I want to sell my soul to MS..er...agree to the terms and conditions, etc, etc. Many times I have to reboot the system (What is with MS's need for reboots?) and so forth.

Is there a way to do this automatically? Say one autorun program that goes though each of the programs, installs them, reboots if needed then finally after it's all done, just quit? I'm hoping not only for myself, but for the poeple's systems I work on, as well as on a local BBS.

Even with cable it can take well into 3 or 4 HOURS to install these updates, since I have to download them, as well as reboot numerious times. MS did issue a update CD, but I wasn't a bit impressed. It should ahve at least all the updates to the date of CD burn, not 6 months or more in the past. Anyone know how to make our own update CDs?

    More info here.

I use updates I've downloaded from the Microsoft Catalog for what you are describing. I get them and burn them to cd at home, and then I can just install them, prn, on other comps. MS Download Catalog It does save a lot of time, especially when working on a comp with a slow connection speed, and very convenient, when working on a system that isn't online, for whatever reason.

    Oh, and I forgot!

Welcome to the BBS! Try to keep all relevant discussion on the boards so others can learn. Memorize the posting rules, or the moderators will quote them to you (And you thought the 10 Commandments were important! Ha! ;) )

Just for fun, read an old thread on "reboots ". :D

trouble making update cd for XP.

OK, I have tried several times to create a slipstream using the detailed instructions found at www.windows-help.net/windowsxp/winxp-sp1-bootcd.htm and received nothing but error messages. The more detailed is as follows:

Failed to copy some or all of the files necessary for integrated install.
    Please check that:
a)No network or copy errors occurred during the integration process
b)The format of the destination directory is correct. The files integrated must reside in an i386 and/or ia64 or nec98 directory (i.e. for an i386 share, if you typed "update /s:c:\cdshare ", the files must be in the c:cdshare\i386 directory).

The only difference between the instuctions on the website and my system is the location of the XP CD and XP SP1 directories. I am wondering tho, if I could simply replace the folders' contents between the sp1 and the xpcd? Any help someone may have would be well received. JetToParty[remove-this-first]@hotpop.com

    Present - welcome to you.

Please start a new thread with your problem. It is similar (maybe even identical) to the original but things can get confusing.

My experience is that it is a myth that using the corporate upgrades is faster than using the regular public site for Windows Updates. I once did a fresh install doing it that way and it took forever and I had all the updates ready to install.

I could never get the slipstream right. Since I don't install very often, I've found that just updating SP1A from the CD is no problem and neither is grabbing all the updates wholesale from Windows Update.

Maybe other people have other reasons. But such has been my experience.
