How do I adjust the settings so I can hear the phone ring when dialing up?
    I'm running XP/ IE6 on a Gateway Laptop

'Phone Ring' - do you mean hear the modem dialing out or hear a ring from any inbound phone call?

To hear the modem dialing out (also would be able to hear if there is anyone else on the phone line).
My apologies for not being specific on that.
I'm just a simple redneck in real life.

    :D I'm sort of a high-tech red-neck myself.

Assuming that you have working speakers and can hear music or the wonderful thingys that Windows plays when you start/stop/whatever, have you looked all thru the modem settings you can find for an option to have your speakers active when connecting?

If you did and everything looks OK, you may have to add a command to the modem startup file to force it to make the dialing noises. Easy enough but done differently with various brands of modem. So need to know which one you have.

Hopefully the info will be with one of the books you got with the PC. If not, the free Belarc Advisor will tell you that and quite a bit of other useful information.
