I have critical issue on COM port. When I try to assign COM port below 10 inorder to make serial port setup for Activesyn via BT for my Imate Jasjar PPC.
    ON MY PC WINXP:
    FOLLOWING:
DEVICE MANAGER> COM PORT>PROPERTIES>PORT SETTINGS>ADVANCE on scrolling I see ports from 1 to 64 showing inuse.I am sure that such huge ports are not in use hence wish to delete these ports.so that ports gets assigned at lower number between 1 to 9(active syn doesnt locate port >10)

I tried to uninstall various software viz. BT, PHOTOPRINTER, WEBCAM ETC.
    but cant find solution.
Anyone on forum can help please.

I cannot imagine what would be using 64 COM ports - I checked out my installation of XP Pro SP 2 and found 256 COM ports, 4 in use.

I would be inclined to remove the COM ports through Device Manager and reboot to re-install and check again.

    Thanks for replying

Many thnks for replying; however I am not able to view all these ports via Device Manager even after I select "view hidden items ".I think there may be some solution by changing environment variables so that " hidden items are revealed" I dont know how it can be done.
    Any solution

Suggest you visit www.grc.com, go to shields up and do all the tests that apply to your question.

I was not clear enough - I meant remove the COM port entry in Device Manager - not individual ports.

You can use the Windows utility Devcon.exe. As the PNP ID for serial ports is PNP0501 or *PNP0501 you could use the REMOVE command.

    devcon remove *PNP0501

This would remove all serial ports. Reboot and let XP re-enumerate the ports.

You may have to make additional registry changes if XP after a restart re-enumeates the ports in the same fashion again.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q283063

That should remove the 'in use' issue.

Finally, you might even have to add a switch to startup. /fastdetect:comnumber

This switch turns off serial and bus mouse detection in the Ntdetect.com file for the specified port. Use this switch if you have a component other than a mouse that is attached to a serial port during the startup process. For example, type /fastdetect:comnumber, where number is the number of the serial port. Ports may be separated with commas to turn off more than one port. If you use /fastdetect, and you do not specify a communications port, serial mouse detection is turned off on all communications ports.

Note: In earlier versions of Windows, including Windows NT 4.0, this switch was named /noserialmice.

Continuation Activ Syn issue for Imate

Many thanks for taking effort to reply me .I did try but it doesnt show up ,
somewhere I read that I need to add extra string in REGEDIT or Batch file .
I am novice so let me how one can add this string or batch file ; I did open REGDIT >HKEY_LOCA_MACHINE_CONTROL_SESSION_ENVIRONMENT then I
found Right hand side lot of options to add string, so I click new string
but cannot enter Value name How it can be done?

I have another question which is very very important for me , I have Imate
Jasjar , I need to access Internet surfing on Jasjar but wanted the
connection of internet dialup to be from desktop, I did setup Active sync
and also BT DUN , Now suspense starts. Is it that this BT DUN will dial my
ISP dialup telephone number say 1311 (this is the number I dial from my desktop normally)from my Imate or from my desktop??
reason being, when I try to dial it doesn't get connected becoz local telephone Co. doesnot allow this No. 1311 to be dialled from Mobile network hence I want to get this to be dialed from my DESKTOP modem which is connected to my landline telephone. Is it possible to get connected to internet via dialup from desktop and then
    surf from Imate PPC??
Can someone explain me on this or any cheap option .

    Regards
