"PySolitaire is a fork of PySol Solitaire that runs correctly on Windows and has a nice clean installer. PySolitaire (Python Solitaire) is a collection of more than 300 solitaire and Mahjongg games" and "The only requirment not provided by Windows itself is to have the latest version of the Python Runtimes installed. Make sure that pythonw.exe in your Environmental PATH variable.
    Download:* ActiveState Python (*Recommended)"

So it says. In fact the games really are great. And with Python (probably ActiveState's or anyone else's) installed, Pysolitare runs nicely in XPSP2. But I can't get them to run in Windows Vista. Quite possibly because the .msi installer for Python does not put the necessary components into the environmental path.

Can anyone suggest what I should do to ensure that is where they get to? And also - do I then have to register them in some way? And does that include exes as well as dlls? If so, registering dlls - is that a matter of Run - regsvr32 (x?whatever?).dll - Enter? But what about the exes, what needs to be done about them, if anything?

As you can see - I'm somewhat confused about Vista...

And (mod) I'm reluctant to post this in 'Other Software' 'cos the chances of a Vista-knowledgeable guru would be much reduced there - so please be kind and leave it here, eh? ;)

You can edit the PATH value from Control Panel > System and Maintenance > System, click Advanced System Settings. On the Advanced tab that opens, click the button Environment Variables. Under System variables, select the Path variable & click the Edit button.

Now I have no idea what path variables are needed for those games, but you can use the above procedure on your WinXP system to check which variables are there that look like they are needed for the game(s).

To see ALL the system variables, e.g. %USERPROFILE% not defined in the control panel window mentioned above, hold start while you tap r, then type cmd, enter, and then type set, enter. Type exit to close the cmd window.

You mark and copy by alt-spacebar, e, k, and use arrow keys, and enter when area to copy is marked. Use ctrl-v to pase into notepad.

Thanks guys - that was useful. Pysolitaire is now working on my wife's new Vista Home Premium system (and I've got a quiet life!)
