I'm looking in my C:\Program Files directory, because I accidentally installed a game there when I meant to put it into a game-specific directory. I see a folder named lang. I open it up, and it seems like a bunch of nonsense files. I deleted the folder, and didn't get the warning about programs becoming useless, etc. Just in case, however, I restored it from the bin.

Is there a way I can find out what programs use what files, or what program that directory belongs to? Either through Windows itself, or a third-party program (free or otherwise)?

I'm pretty sure I'm safe in deleting this folder, but I want to be positive before I delete it for good.

    Detective tools:

. In Explorer, right-click a file, Properties, Version.

See if you find a company name or program name or something that makes the file identifiable. If the file is in a Program Folder, try several to hopefully find out what software created the folder.

    JPaterson000--Forgive a very simplistic comment.
If the game program worked when you installed it in C:\Program Files then you have all the files you need. Why worry what is in "lang" ? (Usually it has to do with the language the program will use.)
If you have the installation/setup file for this program you can always reinstall it where you want (presumably with the mystery "lang" file).
You probably cannot just relocate the program folder somewhere else, since the shortcuts will not work (that can be changed easily) and more importantly your Registry expects the program where you first installed it. Before you do that, you should uninstall the program using Control Panel|Add/Remove.
