    Windows XP, FF 3 beta.
I installed AVG 8.0 last night, and it attempted to install "Safe Search" add-on to my Firefox. There was no opt-out during installation.
It didn't actually install, because it's incompatible with FF3, but it's still listed under Tools>Add-ons (grayed-out options), as you can see here:
    http://209.85.48.8/228/109/upload/p3878742.gif
I tried to remove this listing, but I can find it under Application Data>my profile>Extensions.
I also tried AVG directory, and there were three files, which referred to FF add-on. I renamed them, but the add-on listing is still there.
Any idea where else I can look for it?

I see what you see with an incompatible Roboform add-on. I was never able to find it to remove it, as it stays grayed out. If you can ever find the item, and there is no uninstall, just delete the files, or forget about them, like I did.

    , I said.
    I had also said:
Just like yours. I am going to do a thorough search, and, if I come up with anything, I will let you know.

I got rid of my Roboform entry. I had to go through each and every folder in the Extention folder of the profile, and had to single click on each Chrome folder. That gave me the name of the add-on.jar file/folder.. I deleted the entire main folder, and when I reopened FF3.0b5, the Roboform entry was gone.
I will check other files, but I think that's it.

Did this occur installing AVG 8.0 Free Edition or Trial version for purchase? All of us AVG users will travel this road with 7.5 updates discontinuing on 5-31-08.

    Thanks

I use AVG 8.0 free, but I found my solution to uninstall LinkScanner totally: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.faq.num-1241#faq_1241

    BTW...
I keep hearing about it, but I can't find any real info about it.

    Dennis L,

Good point, and the following is from AVG FAQ:

    Thank you Broni / Ramonia
Will possible allow install for this feature and see if it behaves with McAfee SiteAdvisor. I have two concerns ... ambiguous red status (McAfee/Google) for some sites (a site I frequent has this status, never had a problem with site) and any slow down in browser performance.

AVG 7.5 Free Edition virus definitions ending ...
I was notified via AVG with a popup screen during daily updates. It stated 5-31-08 ending date. The only way to clear/remove screen was to click on one of two buttons "Update later -or- Install now ". I chose later, waiting / monitoring issues experienced by 8.0 uses.... and I do thank you for that. :);)

I find Site Advisor better. It gives more details.

    broni,

    Back to the original question...

Did you notice, when reading the FAQ that:

Note: AVG add-ons cannot be used with Mozilla Firefox 3 (beta) at the moment.

See this FAQ: 1253: How to disable the AVG add-on in my Internet Browser
    Last sentence...

From what I read in this MozillaZine KB Article:
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_:_FAQs_:_Uninstall_Extensions

Because the add-on is installed from third party software, you will not be able to uninstall it using the Add-ons manager. If you are an experienced user, you can uninstall the add-on by removing the associated Registry entry; otherwise, simply disable it.

In the article there were two Registry locations listed:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Mozilla\Firefox\Extensions\

    Thanks for those registry keys.
I can't try them now, because I got rid of that add-on listing, using previously mentioned method, but I'll keep this info in my mind.

I don't follow this. The original post showed a grayed out item in the 3.0beta add-on manager. This was, exactly, the same situation as I mentioned for the Roboform add-on. Now, AVG says that that Safe Shield cannot be used in Firefox3.0 at this time. Granted, but nothing in the instruction says that the item should have been in the add-on manager, unless one used a profile formerly used by a compatible version. This was the case with my Roboform add-on which had been installed in Firefox1.5, and I am using that profile for Firefox3.0. So, is the AVG add-on installed but not usable in 3.0, or was it installed before with a compatible version?
In my case, I deleted the Roboform Add-on which was grayed out, and on reinstalling it, I was able to see the Roboform toolbar (at least once). And the properties said that the add-on was installed in profile Firefox1.5 (as I named it), with unknown version (I guess of Firefox). The add-on was no longer grayed out. I had not done anything with the Registry.

    Ramona..
I just simply reinstalled AVG, using the above command, and grayed out LinkSecure add-on disappeared.

Interesting, as I followed the same procedure and the grayed out entry for the AVG plugin is still listed???
