I got a new bigger hard drive (WD) and I want to copy my XPpro partion from the old drive to the new.

Is there a way I can do this with out buying another program to do it? ..... If so How?

The newest Western Digital lifeguard tools (vers. 2.8 2001) that does this, does not support XP. :(

    no freebie I know of..

but I use InstantRecovery for that purpose. It's only $35 (got mine for $29 w/rebate) and you'll have use for it as a backup utility as well. It'll create a bootable copy of your present drive, provided the target drive is equal or greater in size compared to the source.

Also, the newest version of Drive Image by Power Quest can do that but it costs twice what InstantRecovery does.

any Ghost program should do the trick. I would guess there are some simple ghosting programs available FREE online, might want to do some searching...

Norton also has "Norton Ghost" and "Systemworks" I believe has some sort of waterd down version of Ghost....someoen can correct me if im wrong, it's been a while since I have looked into it.

While searching for a freebie, I did stumble across another buyware that I hadn't heard of. I think it deserves serious consideration and I may even buy it to replace InstantRecovery, since it seems to have several nice features. It's called Acronis TrueImage 6.0 if you're interested.

ningaming: The fly in the ointment here is the imaging of XP. XP is hard to image with conventional software and requires special steps that (generally using Linux) aren't available with any of the older wares that have always done the job so well.

    Kyrie,
Thanks, that True Image 6 does look nice, great fetures.
I'm thinking about getting it, ..download is only $44.99

I was wondering about the freebe way because I remember a couple years ago hearing there was a way to perfectly copy everything (win98) from one disk/partition to another like I want to do, using a really long DOS command, and thought maybe some one knew of something like this for XP.
