Windows 7 automatically downloads to the AppData folder and I want to be able to choose what folder that download goes to before the download starts. How do I set it so that I can choose?
    Thanks again

This is from the IE8 help file:

    Where are downloaded files saved?
When you download files, Windows usually saves them in the Downloads folder which is located under your user name in the users folder on the drive where Windows is installed (for example C:\users\your name\downloads). When you are saving the file, you can choose to save it to a different folder. Some different types of files are saved to different folders by default. For example, if you right-click a picture on a webpage and then choose Save Picture As from the menu, the picture will be saved to the Pictures folder by default. If you're not sure where the file was saved, you can search for it from the Start menu.

Windows 7 does not allow you to choose a location when you click on a "Download Now" button for downloading a program, it automatically goes where it wants to.

Not so - you should see the standard download window - screenshot from Win 7 x64, IE8.

For the moment I can't find where, if any , to set the option.

The file save location is stored in the registry. It is the "last used" location. For example, if download a file and press the "Save" button, the download will start and the "SaveAs" dialog window will open. Use the left frame to select the location. Next time a fiile is downloaded the SaveAs window will open to that last location.

What browser are you using...IE8, Firefox, something else?

When you click a "Download" link, do you get a window asking if you want to save or run the file?

This kind of sounds to me like the old "confirm download after open" thing from pre Vista - Win 7 OS's. Used to be you could change it in the file types dialog but that's no longer available in Vista or Win 7. I did a search on it though and came up with a page that shows how to change it using Regedit in Vista. Don't know if it's the same in Win 7 or not but my guess is that it would be. You can have a look at the page and see if you have the registry key they are talking about. I don't have it in mine but I've never unchecked the prompt me box in a download either and it may be the key gets created the first time you do that with a given file type.

Anyway, have a look here and see what you think.

FYI, if you right click a download link you will always get a prompt where you can select "Save Target As" and save to any location you want.
