whenever I save a Word doc and many other types of document, the full file path includes a username that I wish to change.

It has administrator privileges because I have admin privileges on this computer.

I have changed the user account name in that folder in control panel, but my documents are still being saved under the old user name.

I would like to delete the old user name completely from registry, etc. but I am not deleting or changing the account.

I want to make sure none of my documents show the old user name in the file path.

But I do not want to lose any documents if the new file path name cannot be recognized

Can anyone suggest a way to do this?

Hi dispatch trophy, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

The only way to change the name of the user account in the actual path name is to create a new account with the name that you want and then transfer all of your data from your first account to your newly created account.

Sorry but there is no easier way of doing this procedure. Take a look at this link for more information, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP.

so far this advice has not worked.

I switched to a third account (not the to or from accounts) as the ms document says.

Then I select and copy all the files except the 3 ntuser files.

then I open the new user account (the "to" account) and I click "edit" and "paste"

But the operation is stopped. I get this message:

"cannot copy index: the requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped section. "

Try just copying a few folders at a time and see if you experience the error message again.

Copy over the data in small parts to rule out corrupted files that could be stopping the copying process.

You don't need to copy the whole profile to a new account.
There's only a few things you need to copy:

    bookmarks/favorites
    wanted files
    documents
    pictures
    music
email folders or outlook pst file

Create a new account and set it up with the preferences you desire. Then copy the files. The use the account for a week or more and copy any other stuff you want that you may have missed the first time. Then delete the old account.

    Evan and Tony:

    Thanks for these replies.

I was wondering what "user-mapped section" means.

It could mean the Word files I tried to create a screenplay template for.

Sometimes word files change themselves for no reason to "read-only "

So in that case would you consider this issue resolved or do you still have a few questions?

No idea, but it could be that the file is being accessed by your AV software.

I have completed the process as described by respondents here and the microsoft knowledgebase article.

The second time I attempted to transfer files, I did not get the "user-mapped" message because I took the advice posted here about transferring the files a few at a time instead of all at once.

I did get a new blocking message, however, that said "cannot copy UsrClass: it is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

I then uninstalled my AV (Avast) and Malwarebytes. Then I no longer received this message. So it appears the transfer has been accomplished.

My original purpose was to avoid having personal identifying labels on my files that could be hacked. It is impossible to know completely at this point if the operation was successful, because there are so many files involved.

But it appears from my initial investigation of "properties" --> "general" that the file path name has been successfully changed.

I want to thank evan and tony t and arie for their help.

When and if you ever get "hacked" it don't matter what name they are under. They will look at anything that they want to look at.
