    Hi Jason,

This can be attributed or caused by a few things that I am aware of. Video adapter, theme, display settings, resource depletion, overwritten or corrupted files, 3rd party app, continuing to run system after previous error from another issue with out a reboot, if other icons also are involved it may be shelliconcache issue, and in a few cases "a mouse issue" etc.

In order to pinpoint this down, it would help to know if you have made any changes lately by installing or uninstalling something. Does a shutdown/reboot take care of the problem? Does this condition happen over time or is immediately from the get-go upon startup? Were you doing something prior to this, that "locked up ", "errored out" or called for a reboot of some kind?

Please answer questions above and see below.....
    ---------
    Fixes may involve:

Something as simple as a reboot.

How about a safe mode startup and then a normal startup. This should, reset the taskbar ie; safemode causes the loss of any non-default taskbar options. This link describes this as a problem/behavior expected to happen by default but in your case it may be a solution:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;129417

Ram upgrade. If called for, dependant upon what you have and what you need.

More frequent reboots, less tasks running at the same time, a reduction of startup applications. Looking for a partcular application, that may be running in the background, that does not get along with all others.

Adapter/graphic drivers, either reinstall or upgrade/downgrade depending which issue is suspected to be the root cause.

Changing your theme to a "windows standard "

Change display settings (resolution(size), refresh rate, font size[normal, small, or customized]). Play around with these to see if a change clears up the problem.

Grab and move the taskbar up to a double position/size and moving it back down to a single.

Right click on the taskbar and uncheck or turn off any toolbars you may have on.

Do a file find for shelliconcache and delete it. Reboot and it will be rebuilt. Steps to do so, for win98, are a bit foggy in my memory, so this boards "search feature " will have to used to get the particulars, Keyword filter should be shelliconcache and the win98 forum should be checked as the forum.

An IE repair, the overwrite of the wrong versioned file "comctl32.dll ", has often been attributed to this.

Using SFC to check for files flagged as corrupted. Again use the boards search feature on the subject "SFC ". Learn how best to use this feature of win98 and become aware of it's flaws. Your only going to use this as helper to point out issues that may be a problem and any flagged as such by SFC should be "ignored" by the tool itself, problem file name written down, and using a search engine or posting the name here in post, will need further investigating to see if this file truly needs replacing.

    =============
Links and sublinks that may help with a couple of the things I have mentioned:
    Delete Shelliconcache

See my comments on SFC in this post. Ignore the other converstaion or subject matter at the top of the post. This was anothers issue from a past post.

If you do not know how to do any of the other things mentioned just ask or search the Archives of past posts as previously suggested. Any questions that come to mind, while your doing this, just ask.

Please remember to keep your post updated with the outcome while trying any of the things suggested, whether the results were good or bad. By bad, I mean, did not help or resolve the issue.

Thank you so much goddez1 for your detailed information.

But my customer has took his computer away cause he want it urgently. And I told him I would phone him how to do when I find the solution.

Do you mind I forward your post to him? Without that machine, it is hard to try everything you mentioned above and nobody 100% sure only one try will lead success.

    Hi Jason,
Nope, I sure don't mind. This is a public board. Your free to copy, print or email the link. If I can help with the problem in anyway, it would make me happy. That's what we're here for. Keep in mind that a few of those suggestions are going to take someone with basic computer skills or knowledge in how to accomplish such tasks using win98's tools and options.

    Found this on
    http://www.creativecomputersol.com/AdvancedTips.html
"First right-click on the desktop, click Properties to bring up the Display Properties Menu, then click on the Settings tab, and click Advanced. Now check the Show Settings icon on Taskbar option, and a small icon will appear on your Taskbar, giving you a quicker view of your display properties, settings, and potential changes you might want to make. "
I have no idea what version of Windows it applies to, but it is not WinXP, so maybe Win98??
