    skype quirks

1 the camera only goes on when I open "video settings" (Skype window --> Tools-->Options) So I can't tell if the other party sees me when I open another setting window. The blue light on my camera goes off if I go to another setting.

    2. I am getting messages about "Poor system performance" The recommendation is that I set the camera resolution lower. The camera is Microsoft LifeCam HD3000.

But the resolution is set to 190 x something. Hard to find the window for the resolution.

That was the only setting, It cannot be lowered and the picture is terrible.

If I get a camera with sharper resolution, I am wondering if it will require more power.

Any suggestions on whether I should take this camera back appreciated.

My skype partners cannot see the video of me when I am talking to them.

I just checked DirectX and installed a new Nvidia driver.

I am not sure if this post belongs in the XP section or the Other PC Software section.

My video on skype is not getting through to my recipients and I am getting "poor performance" messages.

I need to know if I should configure my ports in according with the instructions on the skype site below.

"To work correctly, Skype requires unrestricted outgoing TCP access to:

All destination ports above 1024 (recommended)
    or

    Ports 80 and 443
If your firewall restricts access to both of these, you will need to update your firewall settings before you can use Skype.

When you install Skype, a port above 1024 is chosen at random as the port for incoming connections. You can configure Skype to use a different port for incoming connections if you wish, but if you do you must open the alternative port manually.

If the port chosen for incoming connections becomes unavailable, by default ports 80 and 443 will be used as alternatives. If another application (such as Apache HTTP server or IIS) uses these ports, you can either configure the application to use other ports, or you can configure Skype to not use these ports. "

But when I open up Windows Firewall, I do not know how to configure it.

I would appreciate some help on this.

Skype video chop is usually caused by:
    slow Internet connection
    low end graphics controller
    low resolution web cam

What exact "poor performance" messages are you getting?

My internet connection is DSL 100 MB/sec.
    speed is usually pretty good.

In LAN settings neither "automatically detect settings" nor "use automatic configuration script" is checked.

The webcam was a ms hd3000.
I kept getting the bubbles in the lower right corner saying "poor performance" then it advised lowering the resolution of the camera, but the camera had the lowest resolution possible and there was no option to either raise or lower it.

The picture I saw of myself was horrible, but I was getting very good pictures of others coming through their webcams, so it was not something else in my computer that was affecting picture quality.

I took that camera back to radio shack, so I won't be getting those messages anymore. Now looking for new one.

That's the connection rate specified in the status of the Local Area Connection. It applies just to your local network. That's not your Internet connection rate. DSL is incapable of 100 mb/sec.

To see your actual rate, go here and run the speed test:
    http://speedtest.net/

Post your download and upload speeds.

That's too slow to get any sort of decent video. Viewing video will be choppy and uploading your video likely won't even occur.

I am receiving good video from other people on skype.

Are you speaking only of sending?

    Yes.

Your UPLOAD rate is too slow for broadcasting video.
How much bandwidth does Skype need?

Realize that the speedtest above measures bandwidth between your computer and the suggested speedtest server. Your bandwidth rates will vary, depending upon which server or computer that you connect to. They may be slightly higher or considerably lower. The rates will never go beyond your ISP rate.

You seem to be saying that DSL cannot send video.

Some DSL sends video OK, but your DSL is way too slow for sending video.

For example, your DSL upload rate is 0.35 mbps.
    Your upload of .35 megabits/sec = 358.4 kilobits/sec.

    From another site:

That means that other people that use Skype can have their calls routed via your Skype connection and they use your bandwidth, slowing you down even more.

Maybe I am missing something here, but it looks like
    1) if I have 358 kb/s upload and 3 times that much for download, and
    2) skype will work with 300 kb/s for video and even less for voice,
then I have enough juice for skype.

Does this mean that I might have a shot by using another video call service like MS Messenger?
