    Gidday from downunder folks,

I'm using NS7.1 on XP pro with Courier as my default email app..

I want Courier to run when I click on a mailto link in a web page.

I've already tried about:config solutions posted here and elsewhere, and I've also tried adjusting pref.js, but I get the following error message from NS:
error opening mailbox'C\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4_2003062408\Xi* ' (*where the asterick is a square symbol in the string) when clicking on a mailto link.

The Courier email app is on my C drive, but the email box is on my D drive. I've also tried referring to the D file path in the about:config solution.

Any help appreciated, thanks in advance

    Welcome to the Forum, grossevulcan!

    Gidday to you grossevulcan,

May I assume that this is the procedure you followed for the new entry in
    about:config:

    Control-click on any entry
    Select: New
    Select: Boolean
    Enter: network.protocol-handler.external.mailto
    Click: OK
    Enter: true
    Click: OK

Then you get an error if you click on a mailto link? I don't have a partitioned HD, so I'm not certain about the significance here. You have Courier on one drive and the "email box" on another drive. By "email box" could you be more explicit? I'm not really clear what you mean.

Since you have Windows XP, if you have Windows XP SP1+ you can select the Default Email Program in Add/Remove Programs:
    Choose a default email program

    Look here:
Windows Explorer | View | Options | File Types
    Scroll down to: URL:MailTo Protocol
You should be able to change the application to be used for mailto link there as well, if it is not correct.

Thanks, and post back with the info so we can further help you with you mail problems.

    Ramona :D

    Hi Ramona,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I've already tried usual about:config and pref.js fixes. Yes, boolean string!

Courier is selected as default email program in add/remove

My windows explorer doesn't show a >view>options>file type, however, if it's the one I think you are referring to, yes, it is also set to Courier, which is in the pick list. (I can't remember how I last got to it, but it's there.)

Courier email app has courier.exe and users can set mailboxes for each address or set of address. I have the .exe on the C drive and my email box: name.box resides on the D drive.

All desktop shortcuts default to this D drive file and work fine.

Is this additional clarification useful at all?

    Cheers

    Hi grossevulcan,

Oops, those files (in Windows Explorer) are hidden by default.

    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders

I wish I could say everything is perfectly clear and I know exactly where the problem lies, but I cannot. Blast! You've done what is recommended by Netscape, and other than the two drive situation, I have little to add. I'll do some more searching around, and hopefully I'll come up with something. I'm thinking we should perhaps do some exploring at the Courier end...

Specifying the mailbox path in the prefs.js/user.js/about:config dialog will not work.

I have just tested courier here, and it "works for me ". The steps I took were:

    1. install courier
    2. go to tools/folder options/file types --> url:mailto protocol, verify that courier is here.
    what I have here is:
    "C:\Program Files\Courier Email\courier.exe" /default /mailto "%1 "
    3. start mozilla, go to about: config. Add "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto" to the list, and make it "true ".
    4. restart mozilla, and click on a mailto link. courier is started... with the correct address in the to: box.
    5. launched courier from a second user account, created a second mailbox and repeated the above steps. success again.

I don't know how this would work if multiple users are sharing the same user account.

As a last resort, you might consider making a new profile, using about: config to add "network.protocol-handler.external.mailto ", and seeing if courier will start when a mailto link is clicked.

I don't believe it should matter where your mailboxes are located, as long as courier knows where they are you should be fine, but I can be proven wrong... ;)

This was tested on win2k sp4 & mozilla 1.5. I don't have winxp or netscape here to test...

hope this is of some help.

    tranquilo

    Success

    Gidday again from downunder folks,

Success! I finally ended up copying my courier mailbox back to the file folder on the c drive and all now works OK.

NS7 really wants to find what it's looking for in the program files, so if your "call" isn't there it returns the error message I reported in my first post.

Thanks for all you suggestions and feedback, much appreciated.
