How to activate external monitor on this HP laptop?

    I have an HP DV7 laptop here that didn't pass the drop test. The display is completely shot. I would assume the laptop would auto-detect an external monitor and light it up on boot; but, that isn't happening.

    I downloaded the manual and can't find any information on the subject besides where the external VGA port is.

    Anyone know what I might be missing?

    There will be an Fn + ? key combination to toggle between laptop display, external display or both.

    On my HP it is Fn + F4 and on my Asus netbook Fn + F8. Look for an appropriate symbol on the F keys.

    AFAIK no laptop automatically detects and switches to an external monitor - it is a per user setting.
