I clicked on a website and somehow selected "add Active-X icon to desktop" or something like that. Now I have a graphic laying on top of 6 of my desktop icons that I don't know how to get rid of. The properties show it is: home_txtm.gif and located in: c:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files but when I delete this file it keeps coming back. Incidentally, that directory has all sorts of .gif files but a Delete All just brings them back next time.

    1. How can I remove it from my desktop?
    2. How can I delete all those .gif files from the temp directory permanently?

    thanks and happy 4th.

robls99--This program does a good job of cleaning out the Temporary Internet Files folder (your cache).

However, if this does not work, the fact that this file keeps coming back suggests that you have downloaded some malware that keeps reinstalling the .gif every time you delete it.
So you have to do something about getting rid of the malware.
You might want to follow the instructions here.

You could also have a look at the programs that start at boot to see if you can find anything unusual. Start|Run|type msconfig|OK|Startup tab. The programs with checks are most of those that start at boot. Do you see anything you do not recognize? You could post the name here. Unchecking the box should stop the program from running at the next boot, but again, if it is malware, it will probably just keep rechecking the box and starting at boot.
