I all of a sudden lost my internet connection to my modem which works fine for my other computers.

The error message I get is "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP config. "

I ran ipconfig /all and when comparing it to another cloned comp I see that the:

    Default Gateway
    DHCP Server
    DNS Servers

    have been wiped out/not correct.

How do I reenter the correct numbers which I have?

I ran ipconfig /renew and got the following message:
"Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out "

I also went thru the control panel and into the Internet Protocol Version 4, Properties.
Everything matched up with my good identical comp and the same boxes were checked for "Obtain an IP address automatically" etc (so no actual IP addresses were entered in either the good or bad comp.

On the Local Area Connection Status page:
The IPv4 Connectivity is marked Internet on the good and No Internet Access on the bad
The Sent/Received Bytes on the good are about 1,000,000,000 on both but on the bad the Sent/Received are only 1800/0.

Both rear comp show a steady green light and a blinking amber light at the back of the cat5 connector. I've replaced the cable and switched modem ports without any luck.

The internet board is built-in to the MB on both.

    Ari,

For some unexplained reason and after spending several hours on the problem yesterday with no resolution, it works fine today??

I've ordered a new network adapter just in case there is a problem with the built in one..

Here is the printout from both before and after it fixed itself where you can see the difference in the IP's I mentioned above:

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, the IP address you got in the 1st instance is known as an IPIPA address. This is automatically assigned when a DHCP server is not available to hand the device an IP address.

These addresses are not routable so you won't be able to access the internet, but will be able to use your own network.

As to what caused it? Dunno.. a glitch? Sunspot? Faulty cable? Not properly connected cable? Take your pick.
