    Hi all,

Approximately how many MB's are in a Restore Point?

The reason I ask is because I don't really need 12GB's reserved for RP's. I only really need 3 or 4 at most because I usually use my "break me" drive for experiments.

And, just to clarify: System Restore on my "D" and "E" partitions aren't needed, correct?

There is no answer to your question. On every computer, it'll be different.
By default, it's set to 12% of your hard drive, however, it can be adjusted.
Go [Start] [All Programs] [Accessories] [System Tools] [System Restore], click on System Restore Settings, then on Settings button, and use a slider to adjust the size.

    Correct.

To give you an indication .....

OS partition size (C:\) - 50 GB, 24 Gb free

System Restore set at 6 Gb

25 Restore points available going back to early May.

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the answers. However, what I wanted to know and what actually got typed wasn't the same thing. :p

I know about the slider bar, percentage, etc. So, let me rephrase my question: Approximately how many MB's are in one restore point? I know it depends on a lot of things, but that's why I'm asking for the appx. size. I really only need 3 or 4 Restore Points at most. My C:\ drive is 7.5GB's, but only 3GB's are used.

20 Megs would be a good estimate on a typical system. If you have an unusually large number of programs installed, it could double that due to the larger Registry size. The Registry hives are the largest items tracked.

    The files are compressed.

Here is what a typical Restore Point consists of on my system:

    Directory of C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0A438C3B-A487-4C6D-850C-C76C

As you can see, there is nearly 40 megs of data but it gets compressed to 20 megs.

I have 6 Gigs of data on my drive. I enabled System Restore to get this info. I never use System Restore otherwise.

    Hey Dude,

Thank you. That's exactly what I was looking for. :)

You said that the 40MB's gets compressed to 20MB's, so, just to be safe, I'll use the 40MB figure for setting how many Restore Points I want. My "C" drive has only 2.4GB used because I keep all my programs, etc., on my "D" drive. And, if I set the SR Point size to 200MB's, I should have at least 3 or 4 RP's (just to be safe).
