My wife made a reservation on a web site, yesterday, for a hotel in Austria. When she returned to her PC(Win98) later, she found a browser window from the web site addressed to her wrt her reservation. Tested her IP address which is 192.168.1.25; we use a router/hub off the cable and can't be reached by anybody on the net! Did a cookie allow this? Frightening.

Is it possible that maybe a browser window was left unclosed at the end of the transaction? AFAIK, it is not possible to "send" a window to somebody - irrespective of whether or not the IP is known.

Thanks for the response, Brett, and for relieving my anxiety. Yes, I'm sure she left the window open when she stopped for supper.
