`I have purposely deferred downloading and installing SP2 [to improve my Windows XP home edition, SP1] untill Microsoft has cured most of the notorious problems created by SP2.
Two Questions: IF I NOW download and install SP2, will the thing I download have all of the "cures ", up to present date, incorporated into it?? OR, will I have to thereafter download and install additional "patches" to put the various "cures" into the SP2 after I have it installed?
Finally, would you advise deferring the SP2 to some later time?
This may be a dumb question, but thanks anyway.--Lee Mitchell

Not a dumb question at all.

If your PC is running well, then SP2 is a good idea although best done from either a CD or a download to hard disk and run from there. Not good to do from the web.

I think there are a couple of patches since SP2 was released but you can easily get them after you have the SP loaded.

As to loading it now or later, all I can say is that I opted to do it now and have been happy with the results. Just make sure it is going on to a clean system and that you load the latest drivers for all your hardware before you start the update.

No, SP2 will not be amended into SP2v2 or anything like that.

Yes, until this date there are one hotfix for Internet Explorer and another for GDI+ detection. (You will need the latter only if Office is installed. XP-SP2 itself isn't affected.)

On top of that, there are a number of fixes to cure hardware and software issues that apply to specific setups. Go google on Your hardware/software and SP2 to find out if Your system is "vulnerable" to SP2. If You find an issue, download the fix for it prior to installing SP2. (It can be a fix from either the hardware/software manufacturer or from Microsoft.)

SP2 won't be different in another month so, no reason to wait for that to happen (ever). SP2 has been out for quite some time now and if You don't find an issue that apply to Your system, then go for it.

I second Newt's recommendation to do some "house cleaning" as a preparatory measure:

    - clean out temp folders, Temporary Internet Files, cookies, history

    - do a Virus Scan, search for and remove adware

    - install latest driver versions

    - defragment

    - if You use any flavor of Imaging Software (like Norton Ghost) then, create an image of the system partition

Remember that the odds are with You!

Newt and Crister: Thank you, thank you for your replies. My system and number of programs loaded is fairly simple,---so I have decided to download SP2 to my hard drive and then install it. But I will do the "clean-up" you suggested prior to the download. Those clean-up suggestions sound really helpful.

    Thanks------------------Lee
