How fast will a AMD XP chip burn out -

How fast will a AMD XP[1600-1800] chip burn out with No heatsink and Fan on it ?
should it auto shut down before burning out ?

No had a friend who thoght he coulld run the faster xp chips at least untill he got a boot up screen wihout a heatsink and fan .. I thought I had read some where they would fry in a few seconds , just wanted to confiem what I thought , of find out othewise..
