When running a search for files or folders from the search application through the start menu, how does one clear the previous searches inputted in the "search for files or folders named" query box that drop down when one is enetring a new search? This is the autosuggest function.

Right now when I type in a search word, auto suggest brings up dozens of previous words that have been entered before.

I want to keep autosuggest on, so going to the registry and turning autosuggest off won't work for me, just how do i clear these old searches?...

    Can't find the answer anywhere...

grandster--Have you tried Clear History on Tools|Internet Options|General tab? (I have not tried since I do not want to lose what is saved.)

I believe the information is stored in the User.dat file.

I wouldn't suggest trying to edit that file though (could cause serious problems).

It's possible they are stored elsewhere as well but I haven't found anything else.

Clear History on Tools|Internet Options|General tab doesn't work. you would think it would be as easy as that. User.dat file is interesting but don't know what it is for nor how to mess with it if it was correct.

it's not that this is a life-ending problem just a wonder that you'd think it would be easy to do...

Try: Tools|Internet Options|Content|Autocomplete|Clear Forms. This should delete any remembered autocomplete entries.

You also have the options in this dialog box to turn off/on remember passwords/usernames; forms (which is the autosuggest you mention); and web addresses.

spoke too soon - unchecking inline autosuggest from advanced tab only deactivates the feature - doesn't delete entry history like i thought... Any one else have suggestions?

The only way I know of is to use regedit. In win98 they're located in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU. Click on the Doc Find Spec MRU key and you'll see them in the right hand window pane. Right click on the one(s) you want to get rid of and choose delete.

Hi again grantster: I think I found what you are looking for. You want to clear the autocomplete entries in the "Find Files and Folders" on the start menu right?

Right click on the Taskbar|Properties|Start Menu Programs|Clear documents etc. This should remove the remembered autocomplete entries in the "Find etc. ".

    I just tested JohnB's trick:

"Right click on the Taskbar|Properties|Start Menu Programs|Clear documents etc. This should remove the remembered autocomplete entries in the "Find etc. ". "

And, IT WORKED! I forgot, myself, how to do it. Thanks for the reminder tip.

    :)
