I am setting up FF in a new laptop with a Vista OS.

I don't know anything about Vista. But, I installed FF 3.5.3 and all was/is fine except I wanted to replace the bookmark file with one from my desktop with XP on it.

I Unhid the files with Windows Explorer and replaced the two FF bookmark files I found with a copy of the bookmark file from my Deskop computer.

After copying in the new book mark files, I still had the default bookmarks in the Vista FF.

After a few go arounds with making sure I was replacing the correct files I deleted the two bookmarks.html files and also the bookmarkbackups folder and file.

A new search indicates there are no "bookmarks.html" files on the laptop.

Yet I still have the default bookmarks when I load FF

Obviously, there is something with this Vista OS and FF that I don't understand.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Why not simply use the Import and Backup function found under Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks?

I don't think that it is a Vista problem. It is hard to tell, from my profiles, if I have bookmarks.html file(s) because I carried the profiles from long ago, but the proper way to import bookmarks is to go to Bookmarks|All bookmarks(Library)|Import and Backup|Import HTML. I have never done it, but I am pretty sure that the contents of the old bookmarks file on the desktop will be found, along with the default contents. The latter could be deleted. Thanks Arie and Westside. Problem solved.

I didn't know there was a Import/Export function under the Bookmarks and "Organize Bookmarks" Menu.

I had found the import under File at the main FF screen but, it is for Internet Explorer files only and so, I was confused since my main browser is SeaMonkey and I am not all that familiar with FF.

So, I did as suggested using the Export - Import function.

Thanks Again, Now how do you tag this thread as being Solved.
