How do most people prefer the links in a web page to open? Do you like them to be set to automatically open in a new window, or in the same window? Personally I almost always right click a link and choose to open in a new window, so I seldom know how links were originally set and so don't care how the site designer set things up. I don't use tabbed browsers, but do people who do get annoyed when a link is set to open a new window?

I usually prefer the link to open in the same window. If I want to open the link separately, I'll right click and open in new tab or window.

There are occasional exceptions. An information page that doesn't link to other pages; that will pop open when a link is clicked to give a little more detail in a small sub-window. Or a core link page for a number of applications - with each opening in a new window.

I guess my rules would be:
    • New application (or totally new function) - new Window
    • Open simple single detail page - new Window
    • Anything else - same Window.

In general, I would use links that open new windows very sparingly.

Can't get along without tabbed browsing! For example, it's great to use google in one tab and not lose it by opening the found page in the same window; and have all the found pages in tabs to flip back and forth for comparisons. I often have ten or more tabs open.

Of course, that's one example, and I do open some pages in a new window, too, depending on content/use.

    I love tabs.
I even have Firefox set to open any external link in a new tab.
To me, it's much easier to track where I was before, with tabs, then going back, and forth with Back/Forward buttons.
Sometimes, when I need an internal link to open in a new tab (handy on forums, for instance), I just click mouse wheel to do it.
I hate multiple windows, though, and that was one of the reasons, I've never used IE. Main reason was a security thing, so I'm a core Mosaic/Netscape/Mozilla person.

I prefer all pages to open in a new tab. Once IE offered that option, I started using it as much as I use Firefox.

I have a feeling that this mouse's wheel is going to wear out before anything else, though (clicking on a link with the wheel opens it in a new tab).

Mice are cheap. I have at least couple of them laying around.
Besides, as I said, my Firefox will open most links in a new tab. I use that mouse click only on internal links, once in a while.:)

So it seems most people like to control themselves when a link will open in a new window or tab, so making links auto open new windows is superfluous and not really of any help. That is what I was wondering, so I think from now on I won't give my links such properties.
    Thanks guys.

I like new windows to open, too. Hold the shift key down when you click a link. ;)
