So I have this ancient K2-500 that sits in the basement with an 80GB HD and Windows XP Pro. All it is used for is file storage. I don't have any additional apps loaded on it. XP Pro is the only program that resides on the HD.

The mboard's IDE controller only supports ATA 33. The 80GB Maxtor is an ATA 100 drive - I recently aquirred a Maxtor ATA 100 Adapter card. So seemed logical to put the two together.

Of course when the HD is hooked to the adapter card the computer starts to boot and then I get one of the beloved stop errors - I'm assuming becasue I changed the primary controller that XP is booting from.

I know I can fix this by doing a repair installation. BUT, I know I'll have to call M$ because my hardware config has changed - Is there anyway around this without relaoding the system???

    Cheers,

    ICE

    Moron Alert

Well, there's nothing more embarassing, in my opinion, than to run into problems with something because you didn't follow the advice you give to everyone else.......Read the Directions

Seems you don't run into the error if you let the computer boot without the drive attached first so the OS can install the drivers.....DUH DUH DUH:eek: ......then you shut down and hook the freaking drive to the controller card.

Once you do that....the computer boots beautifully, it boots speedily.....and makes you look like a complete idiot to everyone on the BBS....:D

If ever there was a Monday I wish I could have skipped over this is the one.....:D

    Humbly yours,

    ICE

    Hehehe .............. Too Much!

At least you are wise enough to admit an occasional brain cramp - some could learn a lot from reading your comments. Besides, reading the instructions takes the fun out of it.

    ;)

    Gentleman, I appreciate your candor.

As a side note, speed and throughput of the file server are much improved with the Ultra ATA controller correctly installed!:D

On to the next challenge !:)

    Cheers,

    ICE
