I have Netscape 6.2.3 and would like to update to 7.0, which I have tried twice on different occasions but had to back it out because I could not get my 6.2.3 profile to work.

When I select and try to use my Netscape 6.2.3 profile which shows in the Netscape manager profile list in 7.0. , a message comes back which says that the file is not found.

I go look at the profile directory and it seems to be just where it ought to be with the directory path that looks something like:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<my name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profilename>\<random number>.slt\*

So how I get my old profile to work in 7.0 so I can keep my 1000+ e-mails from netscape 6.2.3?

    Yes.

However we recommend you backup your profiles before you install Netscape 7.

You can find some useful information about backing up your Netscape profiles:

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi jsellers,

When you installed Netscape 7, did you install over Netscape 6.2.3? If so, this could be your problem. It is recommended that you do a "clean" install, for both Netscape 7 and Mozilla 1.1.

You might take a look at my guide for a clean install:
Performing a "Clean" Install for Netscape 6.2 and 7.0

I think you might benefit from creating a new Profile.

    First:
Back up your Profiles Folder located in:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<my name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profilename>\<random number>.slt\*

Then follow STEP TWO in the "Clean" Install guide.

Post back if you have more questions.

As long as you use the same profile, it should work.

    Hi jsellers,

More thought on your problem. On the occasions that you installed and tried to use Netscape 7:

Did you copy files from your 6.2.3 xxxxxxxx.slt folder to your Netscape 7 xxxxxxxx.slt folder, and override the existing files?

    abook.mab
    bookmarks.html
    cookies.txt
    custom.dic
    prefs.js
    user.js

Did you try to copy your 6.2.3 Mail files to 7.0? That would be the files without the .msf extension, i.e., Inbox, Sent, Trash, etc.

    Let us know.

    In other words....
Just let the Netscape 7's profile to pick up your Netscape 6.x.x's profile.

Why 6.2 profile was not found by 7.0

Well I found out why my profile is not found automatically as it should by Netscape 7.0. Instead of looking where it should, which is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<my name>\Application Data\...

it is looking for my profile at:

    C:\windows\Application Data\...

I found this out by manually importing my Mail directory, getting Netscape 7.0 running, and then looking at an account server configuration for the mail account.

I "think" but do not know, that this is why I can see my old 6.2.3 profile name in the profile manager, but when I try to access it, I get a dialog box which tells me my profile can not be found...this is in spite of the fact that it is under the correct profile path as advertised by Netscape.

I finally got my 7.0 fixed up, and here is the skinny of how I got my 6.2.3 profile working in 7.0 in windows.

    1) Create new profile in 7.0 with the profile manager.

    2) copy everything in old profile on top of new profile which is under:

    ...\<profile name>\<random num>.slt\*

    3) Close and then fire up 7.0. using the new profile you just created. You will see all your old accounts, but subfolders and messages will be empty.

    4) From the Edit drop down menu select the "Mail and Newsgroup Account settings... "

    5) Select the Server settings for each account in turn and edit the "Local Directory ".

Before you edit, the last folder in the "Local Directory" path should be used in the new path. The easiest way to get this path is to use explorer to drill down to the NEW profile name you just created which for profiles in the default location will be something like:

    C:\Documents and Settings\<Your name>\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\<profile name>\<random number>.slt\Mail\<old folder name>

Copy the path from the explorer address field and paste this over the old path which if you were like me was something like:

    C:\Windows\Application Data\<non-existant path>\...\<old folder name>

    6) You will not see any changes in your Mail messages or folders until you completely close Nescape and go look at your Mail again, and there you will see everything restored.

My passwords seemed to work, but I did not copy the *.s and *.w files as suggested by the mozila fix that I based part of this process on.

In the mozila fix it suggested if you wanted your password you should create a fake password or two in your new account and then rename the *.s and *.w files you copied from the old account to match the *.s and *.w files in the new account. I have not tried this part.
