You're putting the newsgroup name where you should be entering the NNTP server address. Your ISP may provide with you with access to an NNTP server (in which case the address shall be something along the lines of news.your_isp.com) but, if not, you'll find a free and reliable server here.

You need to find out what the name of the server is from your ISP. alt.hackers is the name one of the many newsgroups contained on the server, not the actual server. Call your ISP and find out from them what the name of their server is or if they have a web page it may be available somewhere there (tech support section perhaps). Once you get the correct server name put in you will be given the option to download the newsgroups on the server. Let it do it but be patient as it could take several minutes as there are many of them (my news server has over 40,000 of them). When it's done, type alt.hackers in the search box and all groups that contain that particular string in them will appear. Click once on the one you want and then click on the subscribe button or if you don't know if you want to subscribe to it or not just click on it once and then click on the go to button. This will allow you to check it out before subscribing. If you do this you will be prompted as to whether or not you want to subscribe when you switch to another group or close OE.

    You can try this one.

    post.newsfeeds.com

This is a server that I use if mine goes down (happens once in a while). The bad thing about using it is you can't use it to post to the newsgroup. You can only use it to read whats been posted. You could try the link Brett spoke of but I don't know what they have to offer. Otherwise you'll have to find a free on the net or as I said before find out somehow what your ISP's server is. It's the only way. I checked on mine here and post.newsfeeds.com does have alt.hackers on it. There is one other way. You can read and post to it here in the Google groups though it's not nearly as convenient.

    Hi kinetique,

You did sound a bit frazzled but we all get that way from time to time.

Glad you're all squared away now :)

    Merry Christmas,

    Alice
