I am looking for a file on my external J: drive. How do I get Windows to search for the file on my J: drive? When I enter *.wpt Windows only looks for files with that extension on my C: drive.

Assuming you're using Win7 or Vista, open windows explorer, click on your drive in the list on the left and search using the search box on the top right.

Hi , i would add that search in auto mode will only search those files that are indexed - you can add drive J by going into index options > modify : check J
Alternatively I believe you can execute a manual search by manually navigating to the J drive , with the subject entered into the filter field as described by dnmcleod
however i do not know whether once again the drive needs to be previously indexed

Thanks guys. I opened J: in Windows Explorer and entered my search information as suggested. It worked. I can't believe how simple it was to do; it was right under my nose.

    Brian ...

There's a program called Agent Ransack that makes searching your computer easy. It's the freeware version of the more fully featured shareware program File Locator Pro, but it still beats any built-in Windows search function hands down. It's available in both 32 and 64 bit versions.
