    Hello all!

I just recently purchased a new HP laptop :D, it came with Windows 8 & IE10 preloaded along with many other programs (I think??) Still trying to figure out how to navigate around on that computer! (I'm writing this from my more comfortable desktop with WinXP & IE8!)

There must be a trial version of NIS pre-installed on it. I haven't activated/registered that at all and am curious if I can remove it completely and install something else?

I use MSE on my desktop, will that work on my new laptop? If so, can someone tell me the proper procedure to getting that installed and removing NIS?

    Thanks!

You can carry on using MSE on your Laptop. NIS should be removable via Search->Programs and Features.

EDIT: I should have mentioned MSE is installed by default it just takes a backseat when other security software in installed.

I was going to post that link MrBill but I was wary that it may not work with windows 8 (@Vicki I've no reason to believe it wont, just cautious).

I did remove NIS from my HP laptop (see specs) as I described and windows defender (essentially MSE) kicked in.

Try Start8 - there is a free trial and it only costs $4.99. This will allow the computer to boot directly to the Desktop complete with Win 7 style start button & menu and the Metro interface is no longer omnipresent. Works great for me - there is other software that does the same thing, but I prefer Start8.

    Got it done (I think?!)

Thanks everyone for your assistance! I did remove (hopefully) NIS via the add/remove feature. I checked out the link you provided, MrBill, but was unsure of the version of NIS that was on here? That's what prompted me to try the add/remove feature.

After doing that, I began my search for a download of MSE, only to find that there wasn't one that was compatible with Windows8! But upon searching for that, I did discover that Windows Defender was already included in Windows8 (as wildfire had stated), and it's very similar to the MSE I am accustomed to using! So I activated that, did the updates and a scan.

Thanks too, PeteC for supplying the link for that Start8! Think I might be investing in that program! Heck, I'd probably spend more than that in aspirin trying to figure out this laptop otherwise!:D

    Thanks again everyone!

Sorry about not marking this thread resolved! I thought I had done that (but was on my laptop at the time, so who knows what happened there!)

Thanks again everyone for your help!
