I am unable to access the files on my current hard drive (1 terabyte). I can see the folders in the hard drive but whenever I try to open them, it freezes my computer.
Is there a way to recover the files if I can not access them?

You can try a file recovery program like Recuva from the makers of CCleaner. Wise Data Recovery is also popular.

But if me I would try to repair the drive first. In File Explorer, right-click on the drive, then select Properties > Tools > Error Checking. If prompted to scan the drive at next boot, follow the prompts to allow that, then reboot. Hopefully it will repair your drive.

If you can then get to your files, I recommend you back them up immediately. And remember, a good backup plan involves multiple backups.

    No promises. Good luck.

Hi Mirela, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :) I see Bill has suggested ways to recover your info, but what OS are you using and is your comp operating 100% when the external HDD is disconnected?
Knowing what version of Windows you are using is very helpful to anyone suggesting remedies.;)
