I am using Communicator 4.76 and recently tried to edit prefs.js to make it my default browser [this did not work because my ISP ATT Worldnet tells me I cannot do that, and IE automatically opens each time I log on to Internet]. But this caused a second problem:
Previously, when I logged onto Internet and opened Netscape, the lower right bar would include an Inbox icon with a GREEN arrow if I had new email, or a yellow arrow if no new email. While surfing after downloading all email, if a new email message arrived, I would get a distinctive tone and the arrow would change from yellow to green.
Now I get no arrow showing at all and no tone to tell me a new message has arrived.
Please, how can I restore ---so I get a green or yellow arrow and a distinctive tone when a new message arrives?
    {Hope I have phrased the problem clearly enough}. Thanks---LeeFox

    In Edit | Preference
    choose Mail & Newsgroups
    then Mail Servers
select one of your Incoming Mail servers, then click Edit
Then a new Mail Server Properties will appear, (select) Check for mail every --- minutes.

Anthony: Thanks much. I followed your instructions. Found the Edit screen for my incoming mail server and found "Check for mail every xx minutes" was not enabled! So I enabled it and clkd OK.

I am sure this will solve my problem, but haven't really tried it yet. Dumb me, I was not seeing the Edit button on the Servers screen. So thanks again!!---------LeeFox

    Hi Lee,

Glad to hear your Mail notification problem is on the road to recovery. Checking mail every 10 minutes is good, and most ISP's prefer that setting not to be less than 5 minutes.

Since you didn't have this preference enabled, I'm also wondering, on your Mail notification sound, if you have enabled:
    Play sound when Messages arrive
This preference can be found in Preferences|Mail & Newsgroups.

Ramona: Thanks for your comments. Everything regarding new mail notification now works, including sound and green arrow. I love this BBS site and the help and education it provides.

I hate Internet Explorer [altho I know I must have it installed for some other functions to work], and I love Netscape Communicator.

As just a matter of curiosity, I use ATT WorldNet for my ISP for last six years. I like it. Was recently told I must do a mandatory upgrade to WorldNet Software v 7.0, so I did. This makes IE open automatically every time I go on-line, even tho IE is not selected as my default browser. I have to close IE and then manually click to open Netscape. When I asked WorldNet techs what to do to make Netscape my default browser, I was told, sorry, that is impossible;-you will have to close IE and then open Netscape to use the latter as your browser.

This is very strange?! Have you heard anything about this, and possibly some way around it? [Sorry for digressing so much; perhaps I should open a new post inquiry?]------LeeFox

    Hi Lee,

With Worldnet, I believe being able to use Netscape as your default browser, depends on which plan you have. In fact I read some threads on one of the Worldnet NG's, where users were complaining about this.

If you have the unlimited plan, you can opt not to use the Worldnet (AT&T) software, and create your own connectoid. Then you can use the browser of your choice.

If you have questions, I would post them on the Worldnet NG's. Here are some Worldnet links that are useful:

    General Reference
    http://www.wurd.com/eng/help/reference.htm

    Monitored Newsgroups
    http://www.wurd.com/eng/help/internal.htm#FA

This would be the group on which to post your concerns:
    news://netnews.worldnet.att.net/worldnet.help.software.browsers.netscape

The Worldnet FA's (Forum Assistants) are excellent, and turnaround is usually within the hour.

As this is really off topic, why not continue in PM, and I will try to give you more information.
