Hi, my internet has been running slow..I was thinking that it may be due to my router? I want to improve my internet speed. I wonder, If I should upgrade or not? I want that my access could be something flexible and secure. What's your advice about getting a very good internet connection?

What are you paying for and what are you getting. Noise on the line will really slow it down. You may not be able to hear the noise but they have machines that can.

Are you on Cable, DSL, Dial Up or Satellite?

Lots of questions here. Need more info.

Hi felicityblue, Like MrBill has stated - we will need more info to be able to advise you on your best course of action. Please take the time to fill in your System Details or advise us of your PC specs also.
Under UserCP for your System Details and please follow the info to save and display that info. Neil.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the responses. I am on DSL and I feel that I am not getting what I am paying for. I am thinking of having a new router, Aerohive or D-Link? What could be the best option. Or is it my router after all.

For example, if you're paying your ISP (Internet Service Provider) for say up to 10Mbps but you are only averaging 2Mbps, the first step would be to contact them and have them check their equipment.

I your computer has an Ethernet jack (port), then take the the Ethernet port on your router and connect it to the Ethernet port on your computer. Restart the computer with the new Ethernet-from-router-to-computer "hard-wired-line" connected and see if it is any faster. Routers normally slow things down because they are "wireless" connections. There is a good chance (but, not 100%) that your router is slowing things down some. As suggested, run the "what's my internet speed" search link and measure your download speed. It may be fine. If the results show that your internet speed is what you are paying for, then you may have issues with your browser. When you Browser is open, got to settings and navigate to a screen that shows you an option to clear the browsing history and the cashe. Clear them and see if that helps.

Only Wireless Routers are Wireless. Unless you specifically purchase a Wire less Router/Modem it will be Hard-wired direct to your comp. They need to be hard-wired generally when being set up to your ISP.
We still need to know what your Broadband Plan is - Exactly what number of Mbps are you paying for???
You will need to on fibre-optic to get the Mbps at the best speed available as it depends how far you are from your ISP and how many others are using the Internet when you connect.
Like peak-hour road traffic - you can experience peak-time Internet usage. Neil.

My ISP keeps fogging me off by saying it is my end of the line or it depends on the work load or time of day that I connect to the Internet. My best speed is 3m, worse 15k though it should be 20m.

Bobby. Are you trying to help the OP or do you have a problem of your own?

Are you on Cable? Sounds like it.

Yes I have Broadband cable and I approached my ISP as it directly affected me. My point was to share the information to let others know that it is quite common for low connection rate at times. Sometimes it is best to keep things to yourself.

With cable it is. Cable has either wires or fiber and it is shared with everybody that is on that leg all the way back to the hub. With DSL, you are the only one on it all the way back to the Central Office and speeds don't usually vary very much. I don't care when I check mine, I am always at 7.98 to 8.1 Mbps.

Thread Starter has little to add and doesn't fully answer questions so I have nothing further to suggest at this point in time. :( Neil.

MrBill, I note that you live in the USA, everything is in the fast lane, not so in the UK. Cheers Bobby.
