How can I change the size a window opens up into when I click on a link in a webpage? I use XP Home SP-2.
It seems somehow it changes periodically and I don't know why. Right now they are opening almost full screen and I would like them to open to about 1/3 screen size. I use to be able to change it by opening one and then going to the corner of the screen and shrinking it to the size I wanted, close the window, then in the future it any link would open in that size window. That no longer works. Any idea how I can change it?
    Thanks

floyd--Right click on the link|Open in New Window. Now drag the sides of the page to the size you want. Close the first page (the one that had the link). Now close the second page. When you right click on a link|Open in New Window from then on, the new window should be the size you created--at least until Windows forgets again :) .
Not sure if a left click on a link will also remember. Too lazy today to try.

Jim, thanks for the help, but that doesn't work anymore for me. That's the way I used to get it to change but something isn't allowing it anymore. Do you or anyone think it might require a registry edit and if so where?
Thanks again for the try, but no cigar, yet.

Using Jim's method, if you hold the CTRL key (or possibly the shift key) while dragging the window and still holding the CTRL key click File->Close.

    Or download:
    Autosizer: http://www.southbaypc.com/AutoSizer/

Steve, the ctrl and or shift thing doesn't work. Auto sizer was a good idea except that only seems to work for selected websites and not globally. I'm still stumped, but glad to take any suggestions. Like I said earlier the opening, resizing and closing use to work for me, but something must have changed to make it not work now.

More straws (but can often cure strange, one-off XP issues)

    1. from start=>run key in
    Code:
    sfc /scannow
    and OK.

    2. from start=>run key in cmd and OK. Then at the command prompt, key in
    Code:
    chkdsk /f
and ENTER. When it says it can't be done unless you reboot, answer Yes and then reboot.

Welshjim, I tried the regedit and no go. This is so strange.

Newt, I was going to try your suggestion but when I run that script, I get an error after it starts to run.

    The error reads,
"Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions" It then wants me to put my Windows CD in to restore files to original versions.
My question is will I overwrite all my updates done over time by doing this, or is this a harmless procedure?

Thanks for everybody's help. It really is appreciated.

flloyd--Being asked to insert your Windows CD is standard procedure for sfc /scannow. What is happening is that Windows is checking all sources of uncorrupted and latest Windows system files to replace any that need replacing. The CD is one source.
You will not normally overwrite updates.
Hpwever, after you are finished, it would not hurt to go to Windows Update and see if you are offered any new High Priority Update.

Welshjim, I did the scannow and it didn't seem to damage the updates, but likewise it did not help either.
I went to the link you suggested earlier, and did the regedit suggested there.

"Try deleting the Window_Placement registry entry found at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "

That didn't help either because as soon as I reboot the registry entry goes right back to the same. I'm wondering if changing that value would be the answer, but I have no idea what to change it to.

    Anybody got more ideas?

flloyd--Regrets. My first post should have fixed things, but since it didn't, I am at a loss. Have you played around with the - and + buttons at the right top of the window before and after resizing?

Oh ya. I've had this problem before but it seems to go away or sometime just change for unexplained reasons. I was hoping to figure it out once and for all. Microsoft doesn't have any email help or anything for questions with their products, do they? I know if you have problems with something on their update system they will work with you by email until it's fixed, but it seems to me it's limited to their update page.
