I'm working on a Windows 98 laptop and my McAfee firewall is telling me that the date is January 12, 2012. The month & date are correct, however, 2012? I have no idea how or when this change occurred and have no idea how to correct it. Also Windows Update gives me an error due of this discrepancy. The error messages advised me to correct the date & time, however, there is no option for setting the year. Any assistance would be a great help!
    Thanks,

You can double click on the clock in the system tray and change the date there but I don't know if this effects the bios clock or not. Try setting it there (clock in the system tray) , reboot and see if it sticks. If not, you'll have to change it in your bios setup.

Wow, Zander, that was fast! In 98, there is nowhere to change the year (not like XP). How does one edit the bios? I'm totally up for learning, however, if you think I should I just hand it over to one of the "big kids" just say the word.

To edit the BIOS you must watch the monitor carefully while booting to see what key to press to enter the setup program and then the next time it boots, tap it. You may have to try several times at first. when the setup program comes up, directions are in a small window on the screen. generally you will use the keyboard (mouse is not available). Usually just go to the time on the opening page and follow directions to change it to whatever you think it should be.

There's a small program from the NIST (National Internet Time Service) called nistime-32bit.exe that might do it automatically online for you. Click the link and save it to your disk, then just run it.

You can change the date on Win98, but I'm now on Linux so can not look. I think when you click on the clock the new window on the right side will be the time and the left will be the calander for date and year . It should change the bios setting as well.

Another way to change the date is to:
    1. click Start | Run, type in the word command and press [Enter].

    2. At the DOS prompt, type:
      date
and press [Enter]. You should now something similar to the following:
      The current date is: 01/13/2006
      Enter the new date: (mm-dd-yy)
with your cursor blinking at the end of the second line.

    3. At this point you can either type in a new date, (in the format requested on that second line), or you can press [Enter] to leave it as is and return to the DOS prompt.

    4. When you're done, you can close the DOS window and return to Windows by typing:
      exit
      and pressing [Enter].
Note that you can change the time in exactly the same manner by substituting time for date.

In Windows 98 Date/Time Properties you can change the year too, see attached picture.

Like Zander said, I'm not sure if it "sticks" (i.e. changes the BIOS time too).

    Dear "Super-Geniuses ",
Thank you all for your input and expertise. It worked! Well SpywareDr's solution did and it was easy-schmeasy... just how I like it. Also, it stuck on the reboot.

Zander, Arie, TopFarmer, the year is not display anywhere in the 98 Date & Time dialog. The left pull-down is the month, right is the "day ". There is no year to be found.

Sparrow, I could not see the setup program on the reboot. Not even a split second flash. But thanks.

Again, thank for the assistance. Love you all!

P.S. - Zander, love the quote!
