When I try to copy 1 shortcut icon from one computer to another, the copied icon turns into a default IE icon. I'm using IE8/XP-Pro. I've tried setting Properties both Read Only on/off but it doesn't help.

How can I copy them properly?

Shortcut icon to where ? Shortcut icons have no meaning themselves unless you also have the associated file on the other computer in the correct place.

    Good question,

All the shortcut icons are to bank websites and the original and copy work fine. The colorful source icons just don't copy across my home network but everything else does.

The shortcut icon you see on your computer is actually a favicon or bookmark icon which comes from the actual Web site. When the page is loaded in the Web browser the icon is downloaded from the site along with the page.

You will see this icon next to the site address in the address bar in the browser. If you then add the site to Favorites or make a shortcut to the site, the icon used will be THAT icon that got downloaded.

These icons are stored in Temporary Internet Files.

The second computer does not have the desired icons in its Temp Internet Files folder, thus the default IE icon will be used.

If for example you want the shortcut on your Desktop, visit the site using the copied shortcut. You will see the site's icon in the address bar. Delete the copied shortcut and then drag the address bar icon to your Desktop.

FYI, you can also visit the site and then click the Favorites menu and then click Add To Favorites. The site will thereafter always be available in the Favorites menu.

The problem is, if I go to the site, get a valid icon in the url and drag it to the desktop, it immediately switches to a IE default icon.

Likewise if I Create Shortcut on the site with the valid icon (ie nytimes.com) in the url, the created icon placed on the desktop is also the IE default.

    Help?

    Try this:
    Go to the site.
Use Favorites Menu > Add To Favorites.
Then open My Computer and type this in the address bar:

    %UserProfile%\Favorites

    then press the Enter key.

Do the site icons show up there? (they should)
If so, copy the shortcut to the Desktop.

In order to retain the site icons you may have to add those sites to Favorites.

    TonyT etc.

I feel a little dumb! I thought I had IE8 on both computers but it turns out that I had not updated my IE6 on the receiving "business" comp because I rarely use it to access the internet. When I finally upgraded it to IE8, the copied shortcuts all "magically" appeared back to the original icons. Oh well, thanks to you guys, I learned a lot in the meantime that I did not know.

    Thanks,

    Rob
