How can I make Outlook 2003 use recipient's "Display As" nickname?

I have searched this forum without success so if this question has been answered before, my apologies. In many of my Outlook 2003 Contacts listings, I have filled out the "Display As" field with abbreviated names of my contacts in hopes that the email address line will just show "John," for example, rather than "John_B_Smith@XYZ.com. "

However, when I write "John" in the address field of an email, Outlook always prints out the entire address. The name suggestions list that Outlooks presents in the drop-down file does not include an option that results in "John" being displayed. The only way I can get "John" on the address line is to click the "To" button, which opens the address book, type "John" in the search field, and then select "John_B_Smith@XYZ.com" from the list. That gives me "John" on the address line -- finally -- but is too much bother. This should be simpler, right? (To be entirely accurate, most addresses work this way; a few work properly.)

I have tried deleting/rebuilding the nickname file. Any help appreciated.

    Thanks. Unfortunately no success.

Thanks for the guidance. I had already read that part of Microsoft's Knowledge Base and taken the prescribed steps. Unfortunately, that didn't solve my problem. I appreciate the suggestion.
