I just completed the last updates from Microsoft, 821557: Security Update (Windows XP) and Security Update for Windows XP (823980). I now notice a program running on the task bar after a reboot. I must say I saw it once before but never gave it much mind. I think that I closed it but I don’t remember. I seldom reboot the machine so if I closed it I may not have rebooted for several days even weeks. Never the less I would like to know if anyone knows what this program does and where did it come from? The icon on the task bar says "HOTKEY KEYBOARD ".

This "HOTKEY KEYBOARD" would control the extra buttons located either at the side of the keyboard or above the row of F keys at the top. One of them may have a crescent shaped moon symbol next to it.
If you never use those buttons, you can disable it from starting up, and/or exit the program.

I disabled it and my keyboard buttons still work. I have and eMachine T2200 and the keyboard has 18 special keys and they all work weather I run the program or not.

So much the better. I don't use all the extra keys myself, but know they are convenient to have.
