I have a two machine (so far) network: XP on one and HP-UX on the other.
    I am using static addressing.
I can ping and telnet both ways using ip addresses.

But if I ping using the host name from the XP box to the HP-UX box, ping fails to read the hosts file and cannot resolve the address.

I am sure the hosts file is correctly formatted.

I have tried it in \i386\hosts where I found the template file and also in \i386\System32\drivers\etc\hosts where the MS Windows XP Prof. Resource Kit Documentation says it ought to be.

    Can anyone help?

the host file is located here:
    C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    or
    C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

It won't read it any place else.

Bursley is, of course, completely correct

Which begs the question why does the MS Windows XP Prof. Resource Kit Documentation make such a fundamental error ! ?
