This has been driving me nuts for months. :(
    Running 98SE - IE5.01 and OE5 .

    Problem:
We have two e-mail addresses set up with our ISP and one of them (mine, naturally) semi-consistantly gets the following message after dial-up.
It makes no difference which account is set up as the 'default' account, either. I have never had this message with the other account. Just 'MikeyMail' !!

I just did a 'format' two weeks ago for a different problem and I thought that maybe, as a bonus, this little gremlin would be gone, too. Not!

The truly aggravating thing is that it doesn't happen every time. ( Insert 'teeth-grinding' here. ) Just often enough to cause my blood pressure to rise and my wife to ask what the 'blue' language coming from the computer room is all about. Grrrrr !!

After the dial-up and the 'checking and/or receiving' process completes and the error message displays itself, I can click on 'Send and Receive' and it does its 'checking and/or receiving' thing again, through both accounts, like its hair was on fire and with no error message.

I have removed the offending account and rebuilt it several times. I have checked and re-checked and as far as I can see each account is set up exactly the same way. There are no different settings from one account to another with the exception that each has its own name and one is the 'default' account. And, as stated above, it makes no difference which one that is. Different 'default' - same result.

If anyone out there has had a similar problem and found a fix for it, both my wife and I would appreciate your sharing it with us. So would the computer - the shot gun is loaded and within easy reach over in the corner.

    TIA :)

    Hi indutch
Have you tried updating to IE/OE 5.5 or 6 even?

    Hi Daizy,

I did try both of them and decided to stay with 5.01. It just works better for me. :)

Personally I think my problem rests with my ISP. I went over there today and talked to them and they seem to think that it's my box that's dingie. I don't!! If it was my box I would think I could never get into my mail. So. . . tomorow I pull all the wires and cables off and carry it over there so their guru can hook it up and take a peek.

I'm betting that somewhere in their system they have a password letter in the wrong "case" or something just as stupid. My password is supposed to be 1 upper case letter followed by 3 lower case letters and a number. I'm thinking it isn't that way everywhere in their box.

I'm going to remove everything and start from scratch with the set up one more time and if I still have a problem I'll take over there and we'll see who is messed up.

I'll post back and let you know happens. The shot gun is still loaded and within reach.

Took the box to my ISP's guru today and he could find no settings out of kilter on my end. :) I didn't think he would. I watched him as he went through everything and he didn't change any of my settings.

I just finished cleaning it up a bit and re-attaching everything. So far it works like it is supposed to and used to. :D Can't help but wonder what might be different over there, though.
