After setting up a homegroup between 2 computers via ethernet network connection, the XP laptop has access to all the files on the WIN7 but the WIN7 desktop computer cannot access any files on the XP. The popup window says that permission is not granted and the network administrator should be contacted (me). I've also tried connecting via remote desktop connection but it will not accept the user name and password of the XP computer.

You can't use HomeGroup with Windows XP. HomeGroup is only available in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows 7. You can join a HomeGroup on a PC running Windows RT 8.1, but you can't create a HomeGroup or share content with the HomeGroup. In Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic, you can join a HomeGroup, but you can’t create one.

It was a NETWORK I set up, not a HOMEGROUP. The solution was so simple: I right clicked on the folder in the XP laptop, properties, sharing and share this folder on the network. Immediately the folder was shared on the WIN7 computer.
