After I successfully networked my Win7 desktop and XP Pro laptop computers, a Homegroup icon suddenly appeared in Windows Explorer on the desktop, even though no Homegroup exists.

It serves absolutely no useful purpose, so how can I get rid of it?

AFAIK this is a default icon that will show up as soon as you network a Win7 computer. It doesn't bother me (I don't use HG either).

    Hi Arie,

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I suppose it's just because I'm a neatfreak about my computers, and because I always have Windows Explorer (WE) open ... if something appearing in WE serves no purpose, I don't want it there.

Another example is the fact that icons for both computers appear in the Network in Win7's WE. The one for my Win7 computer merely duplicates what appears under My Computer (if that's the default name in Win7 - I've renamed it), and I'd like to get rid of it, too ... it was possible with XP, but I don't remember how I did it (and I failed to document the method, something I usually do).

Found the answer on the SevenForums site.

I had to modify the key in both HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but the Homegroup icon is now gone.

Now, if I can just find a way to get rid of my desktop computer under Network I'll be a happy camper.
