Whats going on? I about to embark on my home networking project. I am going to network the 5 desktop pc's and my one wireless laptop. The only problem I see is that the computers run, xp pro, xp home, ME, and windows 2000. ANy helpful hints or suggestions of pitfalls I might encounter on my journey. I would appreciate all suggestions and helpful hints. thanks to all and merry christmas.

you should be fine. however, are any of your hard drives formatted with NTFS? If so, your Windows ME computer might not be able to read / access the data on those drives. You can use a program like this: http://diskinternals.com/products/ntfs-reader/

    to access the disks.

    Good luck!

I think a bit of clarification required here.

If you are accessing over the network, a system with NTFS partitions from an ME PC, the format of the hard drive should not make a difference. You may get permissions issues, but that is related to the improved security model with NT based systems (NT4, Win2k, XP) rather than the hard disk format.

Where you will have an issue is if you are dual booting ME and an NT based OS. In this case you will not be able to access local NTFS partitions when you boot to ME.

In otherwards, you only need an NTFS reader if you are accessing the hard drive directly (effectively over the IDE, SATA, SCSI cable). Over the network, the network interface just hands over the files no matter what format they are held on the local drive (assuming you have sufficient rights).
